Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.

The Manager of Rehabilitation Services is currently seeking a casual Personal Care Specialist. The purpose of the position is to provide a range of therapeutic hairstyling /hygiene services for all patients/clients, promoting and teaching the importance of self-awareness, self-care and its positive impact on maintaining wellness.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide certified professional hairstyling and basic esthetic care.
  • Maintain a positive & therapeutic relationship when teaching patients/clients hygiene & grooming techniques in relation to such topics as manicures and shampooing.
  • Develop, facilitate and collaborate with other disciplines in the delivery of programs.
  • Consult/collaborate with program staff regarding client services
  • Continually monitor emotional behavior, physical (appearance) and report on issues and/or progress to the inter-professional team.
  • Supervise, instruct & evaluate client assistants. Assist consumers to develop practical skills in hairdressing, in preparation for a community job placement as required, & support to gain employment skills.
  • Promote and maintain high standards of safety and quality of care by adhering to Waypoint policies and procedures, hairstyling practices, and maintaining/utilizing equipment appropriately.
  • Ensure a secure and safe environment by maintaining tool counts of all identified sharps, maintaining awareness of all locked areas, and reporting accidents and incidents as per Policies and Procedures.
  • Contribute to team including involvement in program development, program planning, promotion and evaluation of satisfaction levels of patients/clients, significant others and clinical staff. .
  • Maintain all documentation per service and hospital standards, including budget for and manage the purchase of related supplies & tools.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensed Hairstylist with the Ontario College of Trades is required.
  • Preference will be given to those with relevant mental health legislation and Hospital guidelines and polices knowledge.
  • Preference will be given to those with Basic knowledge of psychiatric illness and psychosocial rehabilitation approaches to provide therapeutic hairdressing/hygiene services
  • Results oriented work ethic to work independently and undertake tasks needed to accomplish work objectives and deliver quality, consistent and timely results
  • Demonstrated leadership, conflict resolution, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to adapt readily to change and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude
  • Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation)
  • Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills.
