About the Marketing and Communications Department

Mount Royal has enjoyed a rich history of transformational student experiences, exceptional teaching, and meaningful community partnerships through its more than 100 year history. MRU’s Marketing and Communications team tells that story to the world through a variety of channels ranging from our website and the award-winning Summit Magazine to social media, earned media, internal communications and events, working closely with colleagues in the Community Engagement Division and across the University to amplify the MRU brand and Mount Royal’s Strategic Plan.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director, Communications, your role as a communicator is key to promoting and enhancing Mount Royal University’s goals, brand and reputation to internal audiences. To be successful, you will have a strong background in writing, content creation, photography, video, and digital creation with an ability to communicate in areas ranging from workplace culture and recruitment to change management around major capital projects, the adoption of AI, and more.

Working closely with the Director of Communications, the Senior Communications Strategist and broader Marketing and Communications team, this role will help drive success in a variety of high-profile areas of the strategic plan including, but not limited to, Finance and Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology Services, Risk and Security, and the Student Division.

A highly skilled writer, editor and strategic thinker, the strategist will develop and implement communications plans and write communications across platforms for internal audiences on a range of initiatives. The strategist will explain and implement communications best practices on behalf of internal clients and stakeholders and effectively turn strategies into communications that reach and resonate with the internal campus audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting and amplifying the MRU strategic plan and brand strategy through internal communications plans, from collaboration/conception through to execution including web copy, internal emails, newsletters, visual materials, signage, web and Summit Magazine storytelling, video scripting, photography and more.

  • Working directly with internal clients across the University focusing on multiple new and one-time projects, providing strategic communications advice and best practices.

  • Taking photos and short videos that create compelling narratives to enhance the reputation of Mount Royal and amplify University’s brand voice and strategic goals to internal audiences.

  • Contributing to broader division writing projects and objectives (both internal and external) that promote and enhance efforts in marketing and communications, development, alumni and government relations.

  • Writing materials to meet the goals of special projects, using different writing styles appropriate to the channel - editing copy based on different styles and communications channels.

  • Meeting with internal clients on events and liaising with event planning staff at MRU, particularly the Senior Institutional Events Officer.

  • Participating in crisis communications as a member of the emergency response communications team, with primary responsibility for creating key messages for communications to internal and external stakeholders (students and employees, media, government).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

  • 5-8 years of increasingly responsible communications experience.

  • Experience in a post-secondary is an asset.

  • A highly organized self-starter, skilled storyteller and creative problem solver who exercises sound judgment and attention to detail on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Thorough understanding of CP style is an asset.

  • Experience with video and editing software and content management systems an asset.
