The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for an Archival Researcher. This is a full-time position reporting to the Research Project Coordinator. Key responsibilities include analyzing archival holdings, compiling lists of children who attended and those who died at residential schools, and contributing to updates of the Student Memorial and Death Registers. The Archival Researcher will also ensure proper archival procedures are followed in identifying, transferring, and cataloguing records within the NCTR’s growing digital collection. This position requires working with highly sensitive information and maintaining the utmost confidentiality, accuracy, and respect in all aspects of the research.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

INDIGENOUS APPLICANTS PREFERRED. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).

  • Bachelor's degree is required, graduate degree in a related discipline or archival studies preferred.
  • Class 5 Drivers license is an asset.
  • A minimum of three years' experience working within an office environment is required. Ie. Government agency, university, large non-profit, tribal, indigenous or corporate organization.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous history is required.
  • Experience working with large data sets of highly sensitive personal information is required.
  • Experience in using large data sets to narrow down searches and make decisions on the accuracy of research is required.
  • Experience in using archival and document management databases for the purpose of research is required.
  • Experience in dealing effectively and diplomatically with senior members of an organization and the public, and ability to foster harmonious working relationships with other staff, both academic and support, is required.
  • Previous experience working with Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, or Indigenous communities/organizations is required.
  • Research experience is required; research with Indigenous communities and Indigenous methodologies is preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Competencies with Indigenous cultural awareness, knowledge, and protocols are required.
  • Superior organizational skills required.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with a demonstrated ability to make sound independent judgments, and take initiative are required.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to co-ordinate workflow, prioritize work and handle multiple tasks at the same time is required.
  • Superior writing and editing skills required.
  • Ability to receive feedback, take and give direction and seek clarification as necessary is required.
  • Excellent ability to anticipate and resolve problems is required.
  • Collaborative mindset with demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent written communication skills for preparing research notes and reports is required.
  • Competency with word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint presentations and online meeting software is required.
  • Aptitude for learning new software is required.
  • Ability to perform all duties in a professional and diplomatic manner, and able to maintain confidentiality is required.
  • Indigenous language and/or French is an asset.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
