Position Overview
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the company’s financial and management reporting, as well as all accounting operations. This role ensures the maintenance of accurate accounting records and strong internal controls. The Controller leads the preparation of the annual budget, monthly forecasting, and cash flow management.
Reporting to the CFO, this position plays a key role in supporting Canstar’s continued growth. As an experienced finance leader, the Controller will guide the accounting team—including Accounting, Accounts Receivable (AR), and Accounts Payable (AP)—while helping to build a scalable accounting function to support expansion and M&A activities. The Controller will also serve as a key member of the ERP implementation and stabilization team.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Accounting Department, including AR, AP, and accounting teams.
- Review accounts receivable aging reports and support collection activities with direct reports.
- Supervise vendor and subcontractor payment processes.
- Lead the annual budgeting process, as well as monthly estimating and forecasting.
- Manage financial and management reporting, including consolidations, month-end and year-end close, job costing, variance analysis, performance metrics, and KPIs.
- Communicate financial results and insights effectively to leadership and key stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure the integrity of the general ledger.
- Manage cash flow, treasury functions, cash forecasting, and banking relationships.
- Recruit, develop, and mentor accounting staff to support team growth and performance.
- Build and scale accounting processes to support acquisitions and integrate M&A activities into the back-office environment.
- Lead external audit and tax engagements.
- Oversee payroll, sales tax, and regulatory remittances (WCB, GST, BC EHT).
- Mentor team members to expand their responsibilities as the organization grows.
- Serve as a key member of the Microsoft Dynamics Business Central sustainment and enhancement team, recommending system improvements and ensuring effective system maintenance.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience as an Accounting Manager or Controller, and/or experience with a Big Four accounting firm. Construction-related audit experience is considered an asset.
- Experience with job costing in a construction environment, including percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
- Demonstrated experience with sophisticated ERP/MRP systems such as PSA or Microsoft Dynamics (NAV/Business Central). Experience transitioning to a new ERP system is highly desirable.
- Change-oriented mindset with the ability to challenge the status quo and drive process improvements.
- Experience with Jet Reports, Excel Power Pivot functionality, and SSRS reporting. Familiarity with other business analytics tools is an asset.
- Strong financial planning and analysis (FP&A) experience, including budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and KPI analysis to support decision-making.
- Solid operational accounting experience, including month-end close and financial statement preparation.
- Proven leadership experience managing distributed or remote teams.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and improve policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and functional teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
