PAYROLL SPECIALIST, HUMAN RESOURCE SERVICES Full-Time Permanent
Position Summary We have an exciting opportunity at the Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan (ASEBP) for an experienced Payroll Specialist to join our human resource services team. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the team to complete the full payroll cycle at ASEBP. This includes reviewing payroll to ensure that data is accurate and up to date, assisting staff with payroll questions, and problem solving any errors or issues. This role will also provide support to the Lead, Payroll Services as needed, including handling data-sensitive tasks, preparing a variety of reports and filing payroll-related items.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Lead, Payroll Services and the Payroll Advisor to process semi-monthly payroll for over 200 employees and perform off-cycle payrolls as required.
- Reconcile and make payments to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) within CRA’s established timelines.
- Responsible for accurate and timely enrolment, maintenance, changes, and termination of employee benefits.
- Process all related benefit premiums, calculations and deductions including pension plan.
- Work collaboratively with the Lead, Payroll Services and the Payroll Advisor to process, balance and reconcile year-end payroll, including preparation of T4s.
- Ensure consistency in the application of payroll-related processes and adherence to ASEBP policies.
- Process Records of Employment (ROEs) in an accurate and timely manner.
- Process new hires, changes and terminations in the HRIS (UKG).
- Assist with processing internal Extended Disability Benefit payments.
- Collaborate with the Supervisor, HR Services and Lead, Payroll Services to develop and deliver training for leaders on payroll-related policies, procedures, and use of the HRIS (UKG).
- Maintain accurate employee files and payroll documents in accordance with relevant retention policies, and respond to documentation requests from internal and external stakeholders.
- Respond to payroll and benefit related inquiries in a timely manner.
- Research payroll discrepancies and resolve using sound judgement and understanding of payroll policies and processes. Identify errors and provide solutions and recommendations as required.
- Support the development of payroll-related process documentation and training.
- Prepare payroll reports as requested.
- Continually review HRIS system and payroll processes for efficiency and accuracy, and bring forward recommendations for improvement.
- Support other human resource and payroll tasks as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Your Education And Experience
- A minimum of five to seven years of payroll experience.
- Completion of a National Payroll Institute certification (PCP or CPM).
- Experience working with HRIS systems is required. Experience working with UKG is an asset.
- Experience with defined benefit pension plans (ex. LAPP) is an asset.
A combination of education and experience may be considered.

This position is eligible to participate in the hybrid workforce program. The Payroll Specialist is generally required to work onsite at our Edmonton office a few times per month. Additional onsite presence may be required to support operational needs, in-person meetings, or organizational events.
