Working for the Department of Physical Therapy

The Department of Physical Therapy in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta is accepting applications for a postdoctoral position in learning health systems, supervised by Dr. Erin McCabe.

Dr. Erin is an Assistant Professor who is committed to partnering with community organizations to improve health outcomes. She uses a health systems and policy research lens with the aim of improving access to evidence-based rehabilitation interventions and the amplification of the patient-voice into the health system. She uses has a strong interest in learning health systems, implementation science, patient engagement, and the co-design approaches in research.

Position Summary

Located within the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta, Dr. McCabe’s research group conducts research related to the implementation of patient-reported outcome measures, measurement-based care, and clinical outcome measures as part of a learning health system. The overarching objective of our research is to improve the health system through the study of how to effectively co-design, implement and sustain “practice to data” learning health system components. We use multiple methods, patient engagement approaches and work in partnership with community partners (e.g. AHS, Recovery Alberta, Edmonton Public Schools). Sample projects include a provincial initiative to co-design and implement an outcome measure framework in neuro-rehabilitation, studying how outcome measure practices are sustained within a health system, and co-designing, implementing and evaluating routine outcome measure practices in a school-based mental health settings.

I am seeking a research coordinator to join my growing team. This is a junior level position responsible for contributing to research activities, coordinating engagement activities with people with lived experience and clinicians, as well as project management for three projects related to implementing outcome measures in partnership with community organizations.

Duties

  • Supports development of research protocols, ethics applications and reviews
  • Supports data collection and analysis (surveys, interviews, focus groups)
  • Develops presentations, funder reports, and publications based on research results
  • Develop work plan, track milestones and timelines throughout the life cycle of the research projects
  • Coordinates and facilitates co-design activities with people with lived experience and clinical staff

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree with a Master's in health-related discipline (e.g., nursing, medicine, physical therapy, rehabilitation science) preferred
  • 1-3 years experience managing or coordinating research projects
  • 1-2 years project management experience required, with formal project management training an asset
  • 1-2 years of research experience in a relevant research field
  • Demonstrated ability to perform literature reviews
  • Demonstrated experience with leading academic writing for publication in peer-reviewed journals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated training or experience with health measurement (e.g., patient reported outcome measures, clinical outcome measures, psychometrics, clinimetrics, etc)
  • Training or experience in patient engagement in research
