Description The University of Toronto invites qualified candidates to apply for an Operating Engineer Trainee position in our Utilities and Building Operations Division, Facilities and Services Department.

The successful Trainee will be afforded the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the operation and maintenance of our boiler plant and the HVAC systems in various buildings on the St. George Campus. This experience can be used to achieve the requirements of a Fourth (4th) Class Operating Engineer Certification of Qualification through the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).

The term of this training program is up to 12 months (approximately 6 months spent in the central steam plant and 6 months in buildings operations). Upon successful completion of the program, if a vacancy for a full-time position is available, the Trainee may apply.

This position is part of the UNIFOR, Local 2003 union and the successful candidate will be required to join this union.

Qualifications Education: Grade 12 diploma (or equivalent and has successfully passed all TSSA exams for a Fourth (4th) Class Operating Engineer Certification for the Province of Ontario). Proof of passing these exams is required to be submitted with your application.

Experience Ability to demonstrate above-average mechanical aptitude. Basic electrical knowledge would be an asset.

Other Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing; be proficient in Microsoft Outlook email, Excel and Word and have basic keyboarding skills.

Please note: This is for 2 term positions, both up to 12 months. There is no guarantee of a position upon successful completion of the Trainee Program. If a vacancy for a full-time Operating Engineer position is available, the Trainee may apply.
