About the role

Socomec Group (Socomec) is a global leader in electrical equipment engineering and manufacturing, specialized in low voltage energy performance.

Socomec North America (NAM) is Socomec’s organization overseeing all operations in North America.

About This Role

We are looking for a highly skilled HIL and Simulation Specialist with expertise in power electronics, real-time simulation, HIL testing, and control validation.  The ideal candidate will be able to model and simulate high-power conversion systems at both system and component levels, including rectifiers, inverters, DC/DC converters, static switches, grid interfaces, batteries, transformers, filters, loads, sensors, protection circuits, and controller interfaces.  The candidate should be comfortable working with power electronics design teams, firmware teams, hardware engineers, validation teams, and system architects to develop accurate models, automate test procedures, validate embedded control behavior, troubleshoot system issues, and accelerate the development of reliable power conversion products. Typhoon and OPAL-RT HIL experience is strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities

  • Develop, validate, and maintain average, state-space, EMT, and detailed switching models of power converters, UPS systems, ESS, STS, PDU, grids, batteries, transformers, filters, loads, sensors, and protection functions using Typhoon HIL, OPAL-RT, MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, PSCAD, PSIM, PLECS, and related tools.
  • Build, configure, and maintain real-time simulation environments for Hardware-in-the-Loop, Control Hardware-in-the-Loop, and Power Hardware-in-the-Loop validation using Typhoon HIL, OPAL-RT, RT-LAB, eHS, dSPACE, and equivalent platforms.
  • Simulate, analyze, and validate AC/DC, DC/AC, DC/DC, and AC/AC converter topologies, including two-level, three-level, and multilevel converters, under normal operation, transient conditions, grid disturbances, load steps, short circuits, fault scenarios, and protection events.
  • Support the validation of digital control algorithms, embedded firmware, microcontroller-based systems, DSP platforms, FPGA-based controllers, ADC/PWM interfaces, GPIO, protection logic, peripheral interfaces, and controller-to-power-stage integration.
  • Develop Python, MATLAB, and platform-specific automated test scripts for model validation, regression testing, fault injection, communication testing, performance verification, data analysis, and automated reporting.
  • Model, test, and troubleshoot communication and control interfaces such as Modbus RTU/TCP, Ethernet/LAN, RS485, RS232, CAN, CANopen, EtherCAT, SPI, I²C, UART, TCP/IP, and other industrial or embedded communication protocols used in power conversion systems.
  • Apply knowledge and experience in PCBA design, analog circuit design, and digital circuit design to support modeling, simulation, and validation of hardware interfaces. Review and understand schematics, PCB layouts, component selection, signal conditioning circuits, sensors, gate drivers, isolation circuits, protection circuits, communication interfaces, grounding concepts, and controller-to-hardware interfaces to ensure accurate integration between simulation models, control hardware, and power electronics systems.
  • Analyze simulation, HIL, firmware, communication, and laboratory test results to identify root causes, propose corrective actions, document model assumptions and limitations, prepare validation reports, and provide technical recommendations to design and development teams.

Essential Qualifications, Experience, And Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Systems, Control Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. is preferred, especially with specialization in power electronics, power systems, real-time simulation, control systems, or embedded systems.
  • Minimum of 3 years of industrial experience in electrical modeling, power electronics simulation, HIL testing, firmware validation, embedded control, or power system simulation.
  • Proven experience developing and validating models of power converters, inverters, rectifiers, UPS systems, ESS, STS, PDU, grid-connected converters, batteries, transformers, filters, loads, and protection systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience with real-time simulation platforms, preferably Typhoon HIL.
  • Experience with OPAL-RT, RT-LAB, eHS, HYPERSIM, eFPGASIM, dSPACE, or RTDS is highly valued.
  • Experience with HIL, C-HIL, P-HIL, SIL, MIL, or controller validation workflows.
  • Experience supporting firmware, microcontroller, DSP, or FPGA validation in a real-time simulation environment.
  • Familiarity with high-power electrical systems, critical power products, power quality, grid disturbances, short-circuit behavior, protection logic, and industrial communication interfaces.
  • Strong experience with electrical modeling and simulation of power converters, UPS, ESS, STS, PDU, batteries, grids, transformers, filters, loads, and protection functions.
  • Proficiency with real-time simulation and HIL platforms, preferably Typhoon HIL, including Typhoon Schematic Editor, HIL SCADA, TyphoonTest, and Python API; experience with OPAL-RT, RT-LAB, eHS, dSPACE, or RTDS is an asset.
  • Ability to develop average, state-space, EMT, and detailed switching models using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape Electrical, LTspice, PSpice, PSCAD, PSIM, PLECS, COMSOL, or similar software.
  • Strong knowledge of power electronics topologies, including AC/DC, DC/AC, DC/DC, AC/AC, two-level, three-level, and multilevel converters, as well as IGBT, MOSFET, SiC, and GaN-based power stages.
  • Good understanding of advanced control techniques, digital control, PWM/SVPWM, PLLs, current and voltage control loops, droop control, discretization, sampling effects, delays, and real-time implementation constraints.
  • Experience with HIL, C-HIL, P-HIL, SIL, MIL, and controller validation for firmware, microcontrollers, DSPs, FPGAs, ADC/PWM interfaces, GPIO, peripherals, and protection logic.
  • Strong scripting and automated test development skills using Python, MATLAB, and platform-specific APIs for regression testing, fault injection, waveform analysis, data processing, and automated reporting.
  • Knowledge and experience in analog and digital electronics, PCBA design, sensors, gate drivers, signal conditioning, isolation, protection circuits, and communication protocols such as Modbus RTU/TCP, Ethernet/LAN, RS485, RS232, CAN, EtherCAT, SPI, I²C, UART, and TCP/IP.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with power electronics, firmware, hardware, validation, certification, system engineering, and product development teams.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills, with the ability to identify root causes, propose corrective actions, and clearly document models, assumptions, test procedures, validation results, and technical recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple modeling and validation activities simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet project deadlines while maintaining alignment with team objectives.
