Across our campus – from department-based laboratories to suites of equipment housed within centres and institutes to state-of-the- art national research facilities – our platforms provide our researchers the cutting-edge methods and tools required to impact their fields of research and enhance Canada’s national research landscape.
McMaster is home to a suite of world class nuclear facilities that are managed and operated by the McMaster Nuclear Enterprise. Anchored by the McMaster Nuclear Reactor the other research facilities include the Centre for Advanced Nuclear Systems, the McMaster Accelerator Laboratory, High level laboratory facility, the McMaster University Cyclotron Facility and most recently the Canadian Neutron Beam Lab. Strengthening our Nuclear research profile has been identified as a strategic priority by the President and Vice-President’s in recent years. A critical success factor to this effort is to increase the research user base and scientific impact of the facilities while building outreach and integration to the University’s academic programs.
The Manager will collaborate with McMaster researchers, students, and external partners to ensure optimal use of facility resources. Working with the Director, Research and Education Support, Nuclear, and the Office of the Associate Vice-President, Research (Nuclear), the Manager will help develop policies, procedures, safety guidelines, and fee structures that support equitable access and maximize scientific impact. The role includes coordinating with technical staff, planning equipment upgrades and replacements, and supporting the ongoing excellence of the facilities. The Manager reports to the Director, Nuclear Research and Education Support, and works closely with the McMaster Nuclear Enterprise leadership team and the Scientific Director of the Canadian Neutron Beam Lab.
Job Description
General Management and Planning
- Manage the daily operation of the user program within the facility, including, sample receiving, tours, client consultation, and report writing.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure the provision of services to the facility users in collaboration with the facility’s senior leadership team.
- Develop and implement procedures to ensure relevant University safety standards, including any biosafety standards, are met.
- Provide professional guidance and consultation to internal and external users.
- Interpret data and work with subject matter experts to develop solutions to complex research problems.
- Assist users in safe access to the nuclear facilities and where appropriate assist in experimental design, selection of analytical method for complex issues and data analysis. As needed, work with internal and external users to troubleshoot their methods to enhance their experimental outcomes.
- Receive samples, organize the work timing and planning priorities.
- Manage billing to customers.
- Manage purchase order processing, where appropriate.
- Assist with the planning and management oversight of the operating budget for the facility.
- Maintain a database of all users, including safety training records, billing information, and projects, presentations and publications of work performed using infrastructure.
- Acquire, analyze and communicate data for financial planning, reporting and assessment of facility sustainability.
- Remain up to date with recent developments and advancements in the field.
- Interact with industrial users/clients and set up service agreements as required for the purpose of generating revenue to support the operation of the facility.
- Participate in strategic planning of facility’s goals and vision.
Staff Management
- Manage and ensure users are trained with technical Staff within the facility.
- Allocate and schedule workloads and responsibilities.
- Ensure efficient and safe work practices.
- In coordination with the nuclear leadership team, develop and implement training guidelines and programs that contribute to the Staff’s knowledge and skills.
- Participate in the review and selection process for new Staff hires Infrastructure Management
Infrastructure Management
- Oversee training of internal and external users of scientific equipment.
- Preparation of video instruction media.
- Coordinate communication with users around maintenance, repair, and updates of instrumentation.
- Maintain a schedule for equipment repair, upgrade and replacement.
- Ensure the user experience is optimized for performance and longevity of all instrumentation in the facility.
- Work with service technicians and subject matter experts to ensure maximum equipment performance, uptime and longevity.
- Develop standard operating protocols and procedures for nuclear users to access and operate (where appropriate) equipment, use specialized techniques, store and transfer data, analyze data, and handle samples.
Communication and Outreach
- Organize user-based summer workshops, vendor showcases, scientific seminars, and training sessions.
- Communicate with researchers internally and externally to attract new users and initiate projects.
- Collaborate with and support central Communications and University Advancement teams with fundraising, facility promotion and stewardship activities.
- Organize user outreach events, including programs geared towards communities of underrepresented minorities.
- Coordinate the development and maintenance of online platforms.
- Coordinate the development of scientific content and promotional materials in hard copy and for online platforms.
- Develop presentations and present at meetings, seminars, and conferences on the nuclear user facilities.
- Develop and implement strategies for informing different audiences of the services provided, including outreach and acquisition of new customers at meetings and conferences.
