Role: Early Childhood Assistant (Before & After School Age) Floater

Reports to: Licensed Child Care Manager

Locations: Before and After sites in Thornhill, Woodbridge, and Newmarket

Position Type: Part Time, 27.5 hours per week (Split Shift 7:30 - 9:00 am, 2:30 - 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. This position will provide temporary leave coverage for 3 months.

Compensation: $24.98 per hour (inclusive of funding provided and is also eligible for additional $1 per hour split shift premium)

SEC maintains its head office in Newmarket and provides public service signature expertise for immigrants, newcomers, early learning and development, Family Justice Service, Career and Labour market integration through programs such as Supervised Access, EarlyOn Child & Family Centres, Welcome Centre for Immigrant Services-Newmarket and several Before & After School and Licensed Childcare Programs.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated and versatile Before and After School Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will be scheduled on a rotational basis between three program sites located in Thornhill, Woodbridge, and Newmarket. In addition, this role requires flexibility and the ability to cover emergency staff absences at any of these locations as required.

The ECA is responsible for collaborating with a team to provide a safe and caring environment for children. In addition, the ECA supports the development and implementation of children’s programs; facilitate various activities that promote physical activity, healthy eating and nutrition, positive personal development and wellness. ECA’s are motivated enthusiastic team players with knowledge of child development and positive behaviour management practices.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Rotate between the Thornhill, Woodbridge, and Newmarket sites on a weekly basis, ensuring consistent and high-quality program delivery.
  • Be available to cover emergency staff absences as required
  • Assist in planning and delivering an inquiry based emergent curriculum
  • Conduct safe and appropriate activities for children.
  • Maintain a clean and organized program environment, reporting any repairs and concerns to senior staff.
  • Supervise children attending the program and promote safety and respect amongst all participants.
  • Facilitate a variety of physical activities aimed at engaging students in fun, recreational and life-long learning objectives.
  • Ensure a friendly and supportive atmosphere by using appropriate strategies to support children in managing their behaviour.
  • Actively respond to the individual needs of children and establish stable and consistent relationships with each child and their families/caregivers.
  • Ensure that the health and safety needs of the children are met and all health and safety issues are dealt with immediately and appropriately. Ensure correct procedures are followed for administering first aid.
  • Maintain records, report problems and concerns to senior staff as required.
  • Provide a healthy snack to all participants within the program guidelines accommodating all dietary restrictions.
  • Liaise sensitively with parents on matters concerning their children while maintaining confidentiality.

Candidate Profile:

  • Completion of Secondary/High School
  • Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) or Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) Certificate is preferred.
  • Current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification.
  • Current and satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Up-to-date immunizations, including proof of TB test.
  • Experience working with children in an educational or recreational setting.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work as a team member in a dynamic, complex environment.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Ability to use various sports equipment used in program.
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation to various locations is required.

Other Requirements:

  • This position requires before and after school hours and will require PA Day or occasional evening hours for an open house, training etc.
  • Must be able to travel between Thornhill, Woodbridge, and Newmarket as required
  • Flexible working hours, including the ability to cover shifts for emergency staff coverage.
  • Physical activity involved, including walking, standing, sitting, bending, kneeling, crouching or crawling, lifting and supporting children.
