As a Tailor within our Quartermaster Stores Department, you will be responsible for providing tailoring services in accordance with established standards and procedures to ensure all members of Peel Regional Police can perform their role safely and to the highest professional standard.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Provides tailoring/outfitting services to sworn and civilian members of Peel Regional Police by; measuring for size using tape measure, recording measurements, fitting garments and marking for alterations.
  • Performs alterations by re-cutting garments, assembling and joining garment parts using needle and thread or by machine (e.g. serger, industrial sewing machines), hand sewing buttons, piping and insignia, and pressing garments using a steam iron. Performs detailing of specialty uniforms as required.
  • Carries out sewing repairs of garments in the appropriate manner, e.g. replacing Velcro, re-hemming and replacing zippers.
  • Liaises with both sworn and civilian members regularly with a focus on customer service for new recruit outfitting, internal officer promotions and special events.
  • Works independently in a fast-paced environment and prioritizes the work in order to meet operational demands which are often time sensitive.
  • Monitors tailoring supply stock levels (e.g. needles, piping, pins, etc.) and places orders upon approval. Maintains accurate records for the tailoring supply activity.
  • Maintains a catalogue with diagrams/pictures of approved uniform standards, which may include uniform rank, specialty bureaus, correct measurements for insignia placement, etc.
  • Performs routine maintenance of equipment (cleaning parts, oiling etc.) to ensure they are in good working order and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing equipment through Supervisor as required.
  • Creates and updates work orders in tailoring database to track work completed.
  • Provides customer service to members via email, phone and in person.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Enough about us, lets talk about you

You are someone with:

  • A High School Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of one year of related tailoring experience working with industrial sewing machines and steam irons required.
  • Knowledge of computerized inventory systems preferred
  • MS-Outlook
  • Demonstrated knowledge working with uniforms in an emergency services or related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tailoring, alterations, and garment construction; use of different materials and supplies to fit, alter and repair uniforms for a large client group.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various tailoring equipment (e.g. industrial sewing machine, serger, steam iron) and ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on the equipment.
