Job Synopsis

MCCS Thrift Shops seek to be a friendly,caring presence in their community, showing value and respectto all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God’s creation the Thrift Shops generate funds for MCC. There are 7 MCC Thrift shops in Saskatchewan, approximately 40 across Canada and 50 across the USA.

The Shop Assistant accepts donations received at the Swift Current MCC Furniture Shop, ensuring a smooth and efficient processing system in the receiving area, and participates in the overall operations of the shop. This position is a Term position ending Jan 31, 2026 (1.0 FTE or 40 hours/week), with the schedule being worked out with the Shop Manager. The ability to work on some Saturdays is required.

Accountable to the Manager, this position requires a self-starter who is able to make decisions while being flexible, adaptable and able to work with a team of volunteers.

    • 2 – 3 years retail sales experience.
    • Self-motivated, able to work independently, and willing to take initiative, while at the same time responding to the direction of management.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds, willing and able to work with a variety of people in a friendly way.
    • Demonstrated cashier, customer service and sales skills.
    • Firm commitment to accountability.
    • Written and verbal communication skills within today’s technologies.
    • Strong organizational expertise.
    • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently
    • Requires about 6 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday
    • Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary
    • Sitting may be required only intermittently and occasionally
    • Ability to reflect the Anabaptist value of service.
    • Ability to manage conflict creatively and redemptively.
    • A heart for justice and sustainability from a Biblical perspective, global understanding and awareness of environmental concerns.
    • Knowledge of the second hand furniture market is an asset.
    • Friendly, outgoing, appreciative of volunteers.
    • Satisfactory criminal record check, upon hire.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow the MCC Thrift mission, under the guidance of the Manager.

  • Communicate the MCC mission and values and the mission of MCC Thrift in a positive manner to donors, volunteers and customers.

  • Assist in the daily operation of the shop including:

    • Opening and closing the Shop when required.
    • Sort, tag, price and put out donations.
    • Answer the phone; in-store public relations.
    • Keep the Shop neat, clean and attractive.
    • Assist and support daily volunteers.
    • Operate the cash register;
    • Daily tasks related to cash register.
  • Exercise a compassionate spirit with volunteers, donors and customers on issues which arise as people interact within the store. Model reconciliation and healing in daily actions with public, donors and volunteers. Communicate between volunteers and staff to keep team interconnected and consistent

  • Assist with merchandise placement, displays, etc. under the Manager’s guidance.

  • Model non-violent peacemaking in the workplace, community and church.

  • Be the point of contact for incoming donations.

  • Pre-sort donations as they come in.

  • Clear donations from receiving room back door into the workroom.

  • Thank donors for their donations; make decisions on what donations will be accepted and recommend other places for donations as needed.

  • Assist customers with loading & unloading purchases and donations of furniture and household items.

  • Safeguarding commitment: All MCC Staff are expected to work collaboratively to create and maintain an organizational culture that prevents and responds to situations of abuse of power (harassment, child abuse, racism, exploitation, and fraud among other situations).

  • Other duties as assigned.

Note: Physical labour is involved in this position, sometimes requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
