172712 - Executive Legal Officer - Department of Justice and Public Safety - Permanent

Reporting to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island (with administrative matters falling under the Director of Family Law and Court Services), the Executive Legal Officer is the lead legal resource for the Supreme Court. The Executive Legal Officer is a senior legal position, responsible for providing legal research, analysis, and assistance to the Justices of the Supreme Court, including briefing Justices on relevant case law in matters involving self-represented litigants.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Perform comprehensive research on and analysis of legal, procedural or other related issues for the Justices of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island;
- Perform legal research on matters related to the Justices’ duties in relation to applicable legislation and the common law, including conducting research and preparing legal memos on complex legal problems and matters of interest as directed by the Chief Justice and other Justices of the Supreme Court;
- Maintain knowledge of statute and case law of interest to the Chief Justice and other Justices of the Supreme Court in the performance of their judicial role, and providing updates when appropriate;
- Brief Justices on the relevant case law in matters involving self-represented litigants;
- Provide strategic legal advice to the Chief Justice and other Justices of the Supreme Court on issues relating to court administration;
- Consult with the Prothonotary and Deputy Prothonotary on legal advice to the court’s Registry;
- Provide legal research and advice to support the work of court committees, as appropriate;
- Liaise with Department of Justice and Public Safety and other stakeholders on issues relating to the court, including but not limited to matters related to access to justice;
- Performing such other duties as may be assigned by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A law degree and be a member, or eligible for membership, with the Prince Edward Island Law Society;
- Extensive experience (five years or more) as a practicing lawyer;
- Knowledge and experience in Supreme Court procedure (e.g. Rules of Civil Procedure);
- Excellent writing and analytical skills;
- Ability to interpret and apply provisions of complex legislation;
- Strong investigative skills, time management and organizational skills;
- Flexibility to manage a broad range of tasks is essential;
- Computer capability in Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro and Outlook;
Other Qualifications:
- Knowledge and experience in criminal litigation with a high degree of knowledge of substantive and procedural criminal law, including theCanadian Charter of Rights and Freedomsis an asset;
- Experience in the provision of legal advice in relation to family law and knowledge of the impact of family violence on family law matters is an asset.
