About the Thompson-Nicola Regional District

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is located in south-central British Columbia, with dozens rural and urban communities spread across 44,300 square kilometres. The TNRD provides more than 120 local government services to approximately 144,000 people in 10 Electoral Areas, 11 member municipalities, and 25 First Nations.

The TNRD is headquartered in the City of Kamloops, the largest community within the regional district. The Thompson-Nicola region has a vast range of climates that experience true four-season weather, with plenty of year-round sunshine, little rain, and warm summers. Residents generally have short commutes, easy access to recreation and the outdoors, and a high quality of life. The TNRD acknowledges that we are located within the unceded, ancestral lands of the Nlaka’pumux, Secwépemc, St’at’imc, and Syilx Nations.

Our Library System

The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL), the biggest Regional District department provides services through 13 locations and a Mobile Library. Located in the Central Interior of British Columbia, the TNRL is committed to providing excellent service to patrons for lifetime personal growth, learning and enjoyment. The Library team provides programming, materials and resources to people of all ages and abilities.

We are seeking a casual at the Chase Library who will create a welcoming library experience for all. The Chase Library is a busy community library where no two days are the same.

Reporting to the Branch Head, casual staff will be scheduled as Library Page (pay grid 3) which serves to tidy the library, reshelve materials, pack and unpack shipments.

Casual staff may also be scheduled as Circulation & Reference Assistant (pay grid 9) which helps patrons of all ages and abilities find answers to their reference and readers' advisory questions, and provide support in using electronic devices. This position will also assist in the planning and delivery of programs and events, register new patrons, check materials in/out, and perform cash transactions.

The Chase Library is open 5 days per week. Applicants should ensure availability during hours of operation:

  • Sundays: Closed
  • Mondays: Closed
  • Tuesdays: 11:00am - 5:00 pm
  • Wednesdays: 11:00am - 5:00 pm
  • Thursdays: 1:00pm - 7:00 pm
  • Fridays:11:00am - 5:00 pm
  • Saturdays:11:00am - 5:00 pm

Public library work is physical work requiring staff to be on their feet for several hours, moving materials and bins, shelving items, as well as working with frequent interruptions. Shifts vary from 4 to 7 hours.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma;
  • Customer service experience and a passion for helping others;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to contribute positively and work effectively within a team environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Demonstrated ability using Microsoft Office programs, social media, and mobile devices;
  • Valid driver's license;
  • Ability to lift 20-25 lbs, stand for extended periods, and bend/reach library shelves.

Qualifications that will be considered an asset include:

  • Experience assisting with the design and delivery of programs and events;
  • Mother Goose training and Food Safe certificates;
  • Coursework related to libraries and information services;
  • Experience working with children in a professional capacity;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team-based environment;
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflict and diffuse difficult patron situations;
  • Knowledge of program/event development and implementation;
  • Knowledge of TNRL programs and services;
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and personal/professional development.

Additional Details:

The position is subject to the provisions of the Collective Agreement with the BC General Employees’ Union, Local 705.

  • Library Page position is a pay grid 3 starts at $19.70/hr.
  • Library Assistant is a pay grid 9 starts at $27.60/hr.

Non-benefitted staff receive a percentage in lieu of benefits each pay period.

The TNRD requires that all successful applicants undergo a Criminal Record Check and provide a clean Driver's Abstract.
