The Calgary Royals Athletic Association is a leading edge quadrant hockey program designed to focus, promote and encourage the development of elite hockey players and coaches, through skill development, with positive attitudes towards sportsmanship, education and citizenship.
Position Overview:
The Calgary Royals Athletic Association is seeking passionate and dedicated hockey coaches to lead teams in fostering skill development, teamwork, and a love for the game of hockey. The ideal candidates will possess the ability to train and inspire young elite athletes, ensuring a positive and competitive environment. For the 2025-2026 season, we are seeking Assistant Coaches.
Key Responsibilities:
The coaching staff will work as a team to develop a plan of action for the team involving:
- Team-building/mental preparation
- Pre-game preparation
- Team discipline
- Video
- Post-game analysis plan
- Tactical play
Assistant Coach Responsibilities
- Takes the lead in the development and execution of team power play (Forward Coach) or penalty kill (Defensive Coach) regarding set up and video presentation
- Provide scouting report to Head Coach on opposing team goalies prior to games and provides regular feedback, including video analysis, to goaltenders (Goalie Coach)
- On the bench during game will be responsible for Defensive bench changes and working with the defensemen (Defence Coach) and Forward bench change and working with the forwards (Forward Coach)
- Assist with team meetings as directed by the Head Coach
- Work Closely with the coaching staff and the Mental Performance staff member in the development of the Mental Performance team play (player communication protocol, team building etc.) and execution of its contents.
- Actively participate in practice via pre-ice presentations, drill descriptions and organization. Also monitors quality of execution. Focus on team defensive play (Defence Coach) or offensive play (Forward Coach) and group skill development
- Assist the Athletic Therapists and/or Trainers in warm-ups, cool-downs and recovery sessions.
- Take a supporting role in incorporating and monitoring acceptable team culture that align with the standards
- Perform other duties as outlined by the Head Coach and Manager
Certifications:
- Coach 1 – Intro to Coach
- Coach 2 – Coach Level (optional)
- Development 1
- Safety Clinic / HCSP
- Respect in Sport
- Checking Skills
- Criminal Record Check
- Additional Hockey Canada Training certifications may be required
Qualifications:
- Previous coaching experience, particularly at youth levels, is preferred.
- Strong understanding of hockey fundamentals, strategies, and rules.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with players, parents, and staff.
- Ability to motivate and inspire young athletes to achieve their personal best.
- A commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment for all participants.
