ABOUT POSITION

The Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, culturally responsive education aligned with the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care curriculum and the First Peoples Principles of Learning.

This role supports the academic, social, emotional, and cultural development of students while fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment. The Teacher upholds the professional and ethical standards established by the Teacher Regulation Branch and contributes to a positive school culture rooted in the values of the Lower Nicola Indian Band.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

INSTRUCTION & CURRICULUM DELIVERY

  • Plan and deliver instruction aligned with BC Curriculum, including Core Competencies and Big Ideas
  • Integrate Indigenous knowledge, culture, and perspectives into daily teaching practices
  • Apply the First Peoples Principles of Learning in lesson planning and classroom delivery
  • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning styles and abilities

STUDENT ASSESSMENT & REPORTING

  • Use formative and summative assessment strategies to evaluate student progress
  • Maintain accurate records of student achievement and attendance
  • Prepare and deliver report cards in alignment with provincial standards
  • Communicate student progress effectively with families and guardians

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION & STUDENT SUPPORT

  • Support students with diverse learning needs, including implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Work collaboratively with support staff, counsellors, and administration
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Promote student wellbeing, belonging, and positive behaviour

COMPLIANCE, SAFETY & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

  • Ensure student supervision and uphold duty of care responsibilities at all times
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information
  • Fulfill mandatory reporting obligations as required by law and policy
  • Adhere to all school, LNIB, and provincial education policies and procedures

COMMUNITY & CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT

  • Participate in school events, cultural activities, and community initiatives
  • Build respectful relationships with students, families, Elders, and community members
  • Support the inclusion of local knowledge and cultural practices within the school

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS & ETHICS

  • Adhere to the professional standards and code of ethics established by the Teacher Regulation Branch
  • Maintain valid BC teaching certification
  • Engage in ongoing professional development
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and respect in all interactions

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or equivalent
  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate (or eligibility)
  • Criminal Record Check (required)
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities (preferred)
  • First Aid certification (asset)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong understanding of BC Curriculum and assessment practices
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive and Indigenous-informed teaching approaches
  • Excellent classroom management and instructional skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and community
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Adaptability and problem-solving in a dynamic learning environment

The basketry of the Nłeʔkepmxc is known worldwide as a refined form of artisanship. The Nłeʔkepmxc Tribal Council (NNTC) was established in the early 1980’s to protect and promote the title and rights of the Nłeʔkepmxc Nation, and defend and advance interests in jurisdiction and economic rights including access to the fishery and forest sources.
