BALANCE’s Assistive Technology Apprenticeship Program and Pre-Employment Program (PEP) share a common goal: opening real paths to paid work for adults who are blind or partially sighted. The AT Apprenticeship Program trains apprentices to teach the technology BALANCE’s clients depend on, while PEP helps jobseekers in Toronto build job-readiness skills and connect with community employment services. This position supports both programs. Three to four times a year, during each five-week PEP cohort, the successful candidate will be expected to co-facilitate instruction and program follow-up. Administrative duties will comprise the rest of the workload: supporting apprentices through their paid training, handling pre- and post-cohort administration, and building BALANCE’s social media presence across both programs. This is a part-time contract position, 20 to 25 hours a week at $25 an hour, with a term running to at least March 31, 2028. It reports to the Assistive Technology Lead for Apprenticeship Program duties and the Pre-Employment Program Coordinator for Pre-Employment Program duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

Coordinates AT Apprenticeship Program apprentices through their 250-hour paid placements, tracking hours and progress Supports the AT Lead in monitoring the quality of apprentice instruction and identifying additional training needs Co-facilitates the Pre-Employment Program, in collaboration with the PEP Coordinator, including pre- and post-cohort administration Supports delivery of training to community-based employment service providers Represents BALANCE at community, university, and other relevant meetings and events Supports the Pre-Employment Program’s Salesforce-based Learning Management System (LMS), including client assistance, reporting, and site maintenance Creates and manages social media content promoting the AT Apprenticeship and Pre-Employment Programs, and supports BALANCE’s broader social media presence.

Qualifications

Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience Solid organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities across two programs Comfort with assistive technology and an interest in teaching it — prior AT instruction experience is an asset but not required, as training will be provided Demonstrates an understanding of sight loss in adults and its impacts on daily living Demonstrated experience with social media platforms and content creation, and comfort promoting programs to a public audience Strong written and verbal communication skills Familiarity with community employment services in Toronto (asset) Familiarity with Salesforce (asset) Ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgment Willingness to occasionally work outside standard business hours Strong preference will be given to candidates with lived experience of blindness or sight loss or demonstrated expertise working with people who share that experience.

Working Conditions

This position is currently remote. BALANCE anticipates establishing a physical office location in summer 2027, at which point some in-office days each week may be expected. PEP cohorts and most apprentice instruction are delivered virtually; the position may require occasional in-person travel within the Greater Toronto Area for meetings, training sessions, or community events.
