If you’re a Registered Nurse looking to contribute to the development of a new unit including programming and clinical processes, this position could be for you!

At the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), we count on the expertise and dedication of our skilled inter-professional teams to meet the health care needs of clients with a wide range of diagnoses, and their families. We aim to enhance this care at our new McCain Complex Care Building located at CAMH’s Queen Street Site, the home of our new Women’s General Forensic Unit of the Complex Care and Recovery Program. This new building will offer spacious units; safe access to outdoor space and a variety of features designed improve patient care and enhanced safety features.

The Complex Care and Recovery Program is currently seeking a full-time, temporary (8 months) Registered Nurse to work in the Women’s General Forensic Unit. As a Registered Nurse, you will:

  • Provide client-centered psychiatric and general nursing care for clients from diverse populations
  • Facilitate evidenced-based group and 1:1 Programming
  • Have a clear understanding of how to develop and implement forensic assessment plans and have a fundamental understanding of the forensic legal and mental health care systems
  • Be expected to ensure the security and safety of the inpatient unit, and practise in accordance with professional regulatory standards, CAMH policies and procedures, the CAMH Practice Model of Care, and the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice.
  • Liaison with other CAMH services and community agencies, perform assessments, and develop, implement and evaluate the inter-professional plan of care for clients with a wide range of diagnoses.
  • Utilize critical thinking and a customer-service approach to care, and offer education, support and supervision to students.
  • Participate in clinical supervision and the research activities of the program

This position requires day, evening, night and weekend rotations. This position is located at the Queen Street Site.

Job Requirements

A registered member, in good standing, with the College of Nurses of Ontario, you bring comprehensive knowledge of emergency psychiatry, crisis intervention, severe and persistent mental illness, addiction issues, recovery-oriented approaches, culturally competent care, trauma-informed care, and group facilitation. You also have a demonstrated ability to make behavioural observations, conduct physical and mental status assessments, and monitor a client’s response to pharmaceutical and care interventions. Additionally, you will have:

  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess or are currently pursuing a BScN and CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.
  • A current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate.
  • Nursing experience caring for individuals with mental illness and/or addiction issues.
  • You will have sound knowledge of, crisis intervention, psychosocial rehabilitation, severe and persistent mental illness and Schizophrenia.
  • The demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of disturbed behaviour.
  • The skills to contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages inter-professional teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • The ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language is an asset.

Please Note: This full-time, temporary position is a 1.0 commitment, which may be subject to change as per the Collective Agreement. Additional hours may be available based on operational needs. This position is part of the ONA Bargaining Unit.
