About the role

This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

This position has an end date of April 30, 2026. The salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff Agreement.

Location - This role is fully remote.

These positions are part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA). Pay will be commensurate with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement.

These part-time, term-specific appointments are for teaching courses in the ALA-accredited Master of Library & Information Studies (MLIS) program during the Winter 2026 term (Jan. 5 through Apr. 10, 2026). All courses for these positions are offered asynchronously online.

Position Summary

We invite applications from qualified candidates for part-time, term-specific teaching appointments for the following courses offered in the Winter 2026 semester. Candidates from equity-deserving groups are especially encouraged to apply.

The School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) has proudly offered the only American Library Association (ALA) - accredited Master of Library & Information Studies (MLIS) program in the Prairie Provinces for nearly 50 years. This flagship program, situated within the Faculty of Education, has been available in both on-campus and online modalities since 2013 and holds the distinction of being Canada's longest-running, fully online graduate program in LIS. Beyond the MLIS, SLIS further enhances its offerings with the joint MA in Digital Humanities (DH)/MLIS and the combined Master of Business Administration (MBA)/MLIS degrees.

A core value of the School is its commitment to Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, encompassing support for Indigenous students and instructors alike.

Reporting to the SLIS Director, and per the Faculty-approved Position Profile, duties include:

  • Provides instruction to graduate students
  • Prior to the start of class: Designs course syllabus; orders textbooks and other course materials as required
  • Upon conclusion of the class: prepares, administers, and marks final exams/assignments; completes records related to grades
  • Evaluates student performance progress and provides appropriate and timely feedback according to department protocols
  • Demonstrates scholarship and remains current and competent in the discipline or profession by keeping course syllabi current and assignments relevant to the needs of the current student
  • Attends course-related orientations, meetings and other activities related to teaching assignment
  • There is an expectation that ATS members make themselves available to students as needed/required

Available Courses

  • LIS 534 - Information Architecture: Web Design for Usability (asynchronous online)

    • An examination of the principles and practice of web usability, with a focus on information architecture, layout and design, metadata, and other topics related to effective web design and management. Includes an introduction to HTML and other web coding.
  • LIS 538 - Digital Libraries (asynchronous online)

    • An introduction to the concept, development, types and trends of digital libraries. This course will focus on the creation, organization, access, use and evaluation of digital libraries with a view to socioeconomic and cultural issues.
  • LIS 541 - Library and Information Services in Culturally Diverse Society (asynchronous online)

    • Examines the central concepts of diversity and inclusion and a range of related issues and contributions with respect to specific populations and traditionally underrepresented groups, and their support systems, in library and information settings.
  • LIS 543 - Human Information Interaction (asynchronous online)

    • An examination of individual and collaborative information needs, uses and practices in context. Students will develop an understanding of the crucial interaction between people and information.
  • LIS 592 - Intellectual Freedom and Social Responsibility in Librarianship (asynchronous online)

    • An examination of the central concepts of intellectual freedom and social responsibility and the range of related issues impacting librarians, library institutions, and library associations.
  • MLIS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program. Other graduate-level qualifications in the area of instruction will be considered alongside experience in the GLAM sector.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the University’s Indigenous initiatives and principles of community, access, and belonging in graduate-level teaching within a framework of equity, diversity, and inclusion

  • Minimum five years of full-time, relevant, professional experience (e.g., at the level of professional librarian or other)

  • Demonstrated currency and expertise in the subject area of the course, as evidenced by publications, presentations, and other artifacts

  • Teaching experience in the online postsecondary environment at the graduate level

  • Experience in the design and development of inclusive instructional resources and assessments

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to work in, and contribute to, a collegial environment
