The Opportunity:
The Senior Manager, Partnerships, Canada will play a leading role in driving the growth and success of Sunoco’s fuel distribution business by leading the partnerships that drive a significant amount of the company’s fuel volume in the country. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for generating incremental fuel volume through product innovation and new strategic partnerships.
Reporting to the Director, Partnerships, NA, the individual in this role requires a broad skill set across responsibilities that include partnership strategy and execution, daily collaboration both with external partners and internally among different streams of business, and the regular analysis of data to identify new opportunities to influence consumer behaviour. The individual must demonstrate business maturity, diplomacy and bring stability to existing partnership relationships while focusing on a growth agenda.
The Senior Manager will be accountable for maintaining enterprise-wide partnerships and providing strategic direction to key partners, including both banking and travel, across Canada. Running point for both relationships, the individual leads planning in partnership with the Sunoco loyalty team, and maintains oversight over promotional tactics, including those designed to uncover new ways to influence audience segments.
This individual also plays a key role in business development, mining for partnership opportunities that are a strategic fit within our ecosystem, designed further help Sunoco to achieve its financial targets, meet its customer’s needs and enable market share growth across our fuel distribution network.
Leadership responsibilities include bringing partnership visibility to marketing leaders, and when called upon, creating presentations and drafting business cases that can drive C-Suite engagement at key strategic decision points. This leader will be expected to develop the strategy and planning skills of their own team members, as well as individuals working cross-functionally, in business units including marketing execution, loyalty and operations, in the delivery of their mandate.
They will be the champion of Canadian partnerships both internally and externally, while maintaining a close ear to the ground on competitive developments across the partnership landscape.
Responsibilities:
Lead Major Canadian Partnerships
- Drive growth through the development and management of key programs with some of the company’s largest existing partners, including banks, airline loyalty programs and mass retailers, executed through company’s app-based Journie Loyalty program.
- Collaborate both externally and internally with different streams of business (including marketing execution, loyalty and operations) to drive agreed upon partner KPIs and Sunoco profitability.
- Oversee internal cross-functional execution in tactical plans designed to achieve in-year objectives, while ensuring shared KPIs are met along with long term growth ambitions.
- Demonstrate knowledge of “back end” platforms and the impact of technical decisions upon existing partnership arrangements.
- Be the champion of partnerships internally, and stay current with development across the competitive landscape in Canada (and beyond).
Data and Analysis
- Partner with the Loyalty team in the regular performance analysis of tactical programming, and in ongoing reporting and analytics that demonstrate the financial impact of partnerships in Canada at the pump.
- Ensure Sunoco receives the best return on its capital investment, by overseeing execution, tracking, measurement and ROI on all fuel volume partnership programs.
- Prepare partnership financial impact reporting at monthly cadence for senior leadership and executive management.
- Use data to inform and justify strategic decisions, and to make recommendations for future actions.
New Partnership Development
- Identify and maintain ongoing leads for new partnership expansion opportunities, strategically relevant with the existing Sunoco ecosystem.
- Develop strategic recommendations for new partnerships, including the business case demonstrating projected volume and profitability impact.
- Cultivate new opportunities within the existing partner roster to better meet Sunoco financial goals.
- Stay current with innovation in the partnerships landscape that can support partnership evolution through new technology.
Leadership
- Bring visibility of partnership activity to marketing leadership, and when called upon, developing presentations that can drive executive engagement at key strategic decision points for our partners.
- Develop senior professional relationships, influence and steward/present results directly to c-suite executives as required, forming and cultivating positive relationships across the company.
- Invest time in the development of strategy and planning skills with the partnership specialist as well as the colleagues that the individual will work with cross-functionally.
- Liaise with U.S. Partnerships counterpart in the sharing of best practices and new opportunities based on platform innovation or enhancements.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing or a related field. A degree in other fields with demonstrated ability and experience is also accepted.
Requirements:
- 10 years of experience in a variety of roles including business development, sales, marketing, and/or client management with strong financial/business acumen. Leadership experience in partnerships is preferred, and previous experience in loyalty is valued.
- In addition, experience managing in complex environments - Convenience, Grocery, Food Service or Big Box - Consumer Marketing, Brand Marketing and/or Project Management
- Proven ability to develop product concepts, test, analyze results and lead complex launches
- Experience developing creative solutions to identify new prospects and build a strong pipeline of business.
- Demonstrated strategic thinker with the ability to work in white space and untapped potential, identifying opportunities and then leading the support, development and execution of plans that align to business objectives.
- Strong analytical skills; including experience analyzing performance results and their financial impact.
- Excellent influencing, communication and listening skills, open-mindedness, and strong interpersonal skills so that the necessary alliances (internal & external) can be forged and developed quickly
- Superior business development and negotiating skills
- The ability to assist in the negotiation and execution of contracts and oversee the onboarding of new partners where required, which includes collaboration with Operations, Legal, Technology and Customer Support.
- Exceptional organizational and project management skills, ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and strong attention to detail.
- Excellent people management skills and ability to align people and resources towards organizational success; Strong leadership skills from leading/influencing cross-functional teams in a matrix organization
- Experience and comfort in presenting, engaging and influencing the partnership strategic vision to C-level executives and partnering with Directors/SLT members
- Results-oriented with a proven track record of leadership that has taken ownership and produced strong business results.
