About the role

Are you a proven leader with a passion for environmental stewardship and wildfire mitigation? The City of Edmonton is looking for a dedicated Wildfire Fuel Crew Leader to head our Restoration and Ecology Team's crucial fieldwork.

Step into a hands-on leadership role where you will directly supervise a labourer crew, champion safety and operational success, and make a significant impact on our city's open spaces and wildfire resilience. What will you do?

  • Directly supervis e and provide hands-on leadership to the labourer crew, including daily instruction, coaching, mentoring, and performance management
  • Champion field safety by ensuring all staff work safely, overseeing compliance with City Occupational Health and Safety Standards and Envisio policies, and leading safety talks
  • Coordinate and participate in work planning, scheduling of labour, equipment, and materials daily, and determine field work locations
  • Manage staff time tracking, approve time sheets and task cards, and handle emergent time-off requests
  • Coordinate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Hazard Assessment and Controls (HAACs), conduct audits for program success, and inspect field work for quality control
  • Staff Development tasks such as staff recruitment, training, program initiation, and providing general guidance and support
  • Organize fleet and equipment daily and maintain a standard inventory of necessary supplies/materials.
  • Effectively and professionally communicate information and needs to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain awareness of the budget and make recommendations to leadership regarding costs
  • Supervise jobsite activities and respond to unforeseen changes (weather, injury, equipment issues), alerting section leadership to emergent situations

Qualifications:

  • Two year technical diploma in a related field
  • A minimum of 3 years experience overseeing crews, in arboriculture, wildfire, or open space management
  • First Aid Certification
  • Leadership training
  • Wildfire management/prescribed burn mitigation training

Skills required for success:

  • Ability to lead, coach, mentor, and effectively supervise the daily activities of a large workforce, including work planning, prioritization, performance monitoring, and attendance management
  • Extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, Enviso, and WHMIS, with the ability to implement and ensure compliance with all City policies and safety procedures
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices, standard methods, materials, tools, equipment, and Wildland Urban Interface fuel load reduction principles
  • Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions
  • Ability to represent the City of Edmonton in a professional, honest, and respectful manner
  • Skilled in the operation of vehicles and associated equipment, including the use and demonstration of proper lifting techniques and safety procedures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to utilize software for the completion of reports and records
  • Experience in project management and coordination
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
