As the Director, Privacy, you will lead Sinai Health’s Privacy and Information Access Office and our institution-wide Privacy program as Sinai Health embarks on both a digital transformation and its inaugural Research Strategic Plan for Sinai Health. In this role, you’ll collaborate across departments to provide direction, support staff, and ensure privacy compliance is embedded in hospital operations and integrated in hospital operations and integrated into organizational decision-making.
You are a strategic thinker who considers mitigation on all fronts. Working in privacy, you understand how gaps can translate into operational, reputational, and legal risks, especially within healthcare. As the Director, you’ll anticipate these risks, design practical solutions, and shape strategies that align with Sinai Health’s priorities.

About This Team Reporting to the Senior Director, Privacy & Information Access and Legal Counsel (Health), the Director leads our small, highly collaborative privacy team, provides an expert “privacy voice” across various committees, working groups and project teams, and works closely with key internal and external stakeholders to advance and enhance Sinai Health’s strong culture of privacy.
In This Role You Will Leadership and External Relations
- Lead and direct all functions and activities of the Privacy & Information Access Office
- Enhance and develop systems, policies, procedures and tools to support privacy and freedom of information compliance risk mitigation, and reporting.
- Work with key stakeholders to achieve strategic and operational objectives
- Prepare status and incident reports, briefing notes, presentations and written material for the senior management team and relevant committees within the organization.
- Maintain and build collaborative relationships with privacy leads and external organizations
Compliance & Reporting
- Create, communicate and monitor long-term compliance strategies and establishing compliance-related standards and procedures
- Monitor the external and internal environment and provide expert and strategic advice on changes affecting the Hospital’s legal accountabilities and related risks
- Oversee the Hospital’s reporting and notification requirements related to privacy and information access
- Support and advance compliance with privacy practices and, in cooperation with other teams, supporting consistent application of sanctions for failure to comply with privacy policies for all individuals in the Sinai Health workforce, extended workforce, and for all business associates
Advisory Services
- Direct and conduct privacy assessments of new (or changes to) operational and clinical practices, technologies, workflows and research initiatives that involve personal health information
- Privacy-related contract review and drafting
- Ensure expert privacy insight and support for key strategic and operational initiatives, including privacy representation on a variety of hospital Committees and working groups
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required
Job Requirements Mandatory
- Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution in a relevant discipline
- 7 years of experience in privacy and freedom of information advisor to a complex healthcare organization
- Previous experience leading and/or supporting program development initiatives that align departmental goals with organizational strategic direction
- IAPP Designation – either Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM)
- Familiarity with Ontario’s health system, including legislation, as it relates to privacy with a strong understanding of the regulatory framework for patient privacy
Preferred
- Familiarity with data governance
- Further specialty privacy training (e.g. AI governance, research privacy)
Skills and Knowledge
- Proven success in a leadership role, with demonstrated ability to apply leadership, critical and strategic thinking, and practical problem-solving skills to the work environment and to take initiative in working with employees, physicians, learners, contractors, patients, visitors and system partners
- Proven ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels of the organization
- Strong communication and prioritization skills
- Strong work ethic, professional, diplomatic and dependable with the demonstrated ability to adapt to changing requirements
