Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Hybrid
Annual salary: $ 72,500.00 - 91,600.00
What you'll do
BC Hydro Engineering has a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) to become part of the
Mechanical Engineering Power Unit team based at BC Hydro’s Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.
This position will have a primary focus on hydro-electric generating systems: turbine, generator, and governor mechanical
systems and equipment.
You will develop skills, knowledge, and professional relationships through different types of work including design, field work
and project management to help build competence for registration as Professional Engineer with EGBC.
Major responsibilities of the successful candidate:
- Provides broad mechanical engineering experience in the field of rotating machines for the hydroelectric power industry.
- Delivers technical support to projects and engineering studies or investigations to ensure that engineered solutions
provide the appropriate balance of technical excellence, risk mitigation, and economic value while respecting interests of
internal and external stakeholders.
- Identifies and selects main parameters of hydroelectric turbines and generators and develops turbine and generator
mechanical design requirements for generating unit projects (new and upgrades) to achieve the best combination of
equipment performance, longevity, and project lifecycle benefits.
- Develops design requirements for governor mechanical systems to ensure reliable operation of generating units and
optimized response during grid frequency disturbances and transient events.
- Prepares technical specifications for hydro-turbine (new or upgrade), generator and governor equipment, evaluates
manufacturers’ bidding proposals, supports procurement activities, and review of manufacturers’ technical submissions.
- Travel to generation stations sites across the province of British Columbia to support project and construction work and
commissioning activities.
- Proactively undertakes problem identification, risk mitigation, and the development of customized solutions to engineering
problems considering value, benefit, and risk to BC Hydro.
- Prepares and/or reviews technical memorandums, reports or other documentation to support projects
- Demonstrates courage to act and takes professional responsibility for own engineering work and work of project teams.
- Liaise with and makes recommendations to engineers, project teams and management on project matters.
- Participates in the development of engineering standards, design practices, guidelines, and asset information.
- Promotes and demonstrates safe work practices and advocates safety by design within engineering design.
What you bring
The successful candidate must have the following qualifications and attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering recognized by Canadian Universities
- Must be eligible for registration as an EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC)
- Two (2) years or less work experience towards EGBC’s Professional Engineer requirement
- Strong English communication skills including strengths in verbal and technical writing, analysis, presentation, and
interpersonal communication and well-developed ability to prepare reports and recommendations and present work to
technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and recognize when guidance is required.
- Strong relationship management and team building capability combined with ability to build solid relationships with internal
and external clients.

- This is a hybrid role and in-office days are based in Burnaby at the Edmonds office.
