Collection Maintenance & Preservation Assistant (CDA)

About the role

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head, Cataloguing, Metadata, and Digitization, the incumbent ensures the good condition of the Library’s collection by reviewing, organizing, and processing physical material. The incumbent is responsible for collection maintenance and preservation by assessing and preparing physical material, including repair, binding, and digitization. The incumbent performs updates and revisions to library catalogue records adhering to bibliographic standards and according to requirements of the Library and OCUL consortium. The incumbent provides administrative support to the Department, and prepares and updates documentation related to collection maintenance and preservation workflows. The incumbent trains and supervise student assistants, and performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • A high level of computer literacy in the tools and technology used for physical material preservation and bibliographic description.
  • The incumbent must have attained technical proficiency and competencies in the principles and concepts of bibliographic description, including cataloguing standards and record encoding, as well as familiarity with library terminology and tools.
  • Ability to understand LC and CODOC classification schedules and understand and interpret MARC21 and RDA/AACR2 standards.
  • Ability to work with high attention to detail and must be able to identify and resolve problems efficiently and logically.
  • A high service standard and effective written and oral communication is essential for working with library personnel and service providers.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • A two-year Library and Information Technician Diploma from a recognized college.
  • Completion of a university degree considered an asset.
  • Three years of relevant and related library experience working with bibliographic records and physical format materials.
