Hybrid

About the role

Classification: Grid 27, BCGEU Membership

Office Location: Fort St John

Salary: $83,312.49 - $94,991.51 – Permanent Full-Time, based on a 35-hour work week. An additional 10.75% Job Family Market Multiplier will be added to the posted salary.  An additional 3% Location Allowance will be added to posted salary for northern location.

About the Job:                The Compliance & Enforcement Officer conducts inspections and investigations of all energy industry operations to monitor for compliance and initiate enforcement of the Energy Resources Activities Act (ERAA)and specified enactments and associated regulations, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Act, Mines Act, the Environmental Assessment Act, and other applicable legislation.

The position works closely with compliance and enforcement officials within other government ministries and agencies such as the Ministry of Forest, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, WorkSafe BC, Environmental Assessment Office, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canada Energy Regulator, Environment Canada, and Natural Resource Canada.

Please note: This position has a focus on compliance inspections.

As a Compliance and Enforcement Officer, your week begins by planning and coordinating field inspections for your assigned region — reviewing permit details, following-up on inspections, checking safety equipment, and mapping out site visits across Northeast B.C.

You may visit several locations in a day, including well sites, pipeline corridors, construction areas or facilities. In the field, you'll assess environmental and technical compliance of these sites and equipment, document findings and speak directly with operators. You will liaise with Indigenous communities, landowners, or the public to facilitate knowledge sharing and address concerns. Your work ensures safe, responsible energy development aligned with provincial regulations.

Back in the office (or working remotely), you’ll translate field observations into reports, follow up on previous inspections, and collaborate with internal teams on enforcement actions when needed. This dynamic role requires independent decision-making, sound judgment, technical knowledge, and strong communication skills. You’ll engage regularly with a wide range of people—from permit holders to First Nations partners—making relationship-building just as important as regulatory knowledge.

You serve as both a regulator and a facilitator—ensuring industry accountability while supporting a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement. Every day brings a new challenge and the chance to make a meaningful impact on B.C.’s energy landscape, ensuring the safe, responsible, and sustainable development of British Columbia’s energy resources.
