Responsibilities Position Summary: This is an excellent opportunity to take the next step as a Casualty underwriter in today’s competitive marketplace. The position empowers the Senior Underwriter to deploy capital in accordance with Berkley’s underwriting appetite, continue to build and utilize your analytical and market-facing skills in a differentiated manner to create unique solutions for our broker and client base. This position primarily focuses on Mid-Market Canadian Companies in all regions of the country.
What will your typical day look like?
- Underwrites new and renewal business submissions ensuring proper risk selection, endorsements and pricing while adhering to underwriting authority.
- Responsible for individual profitable growth and management of a portion of department premium, as assigned.
- Independently establishes and maintains effective relationships with Brokers and generates opportunities.
- Negotiates pricing, terms and conditions for proposed insurance contracts.
- Attends and actively engages in client meetings, comes prepared with well researched questions and communicates effectively with the client.
- Will take an active approach to off-cycle client-engagement to build Berkley Canada brand reputation
- Works with a sense of urgency and meets deadlines.
- Handles complex policy administration including manuscripts, and other custom requests. Works with legal and claims teams to ensure proper execution.
- Works both independently and collaboratively to assess risk.
- Adheres to all authority/underwriting guidelines.
- Performs file audits of individual risks for compliance with company guidelines and reinsurance conditions.
- Stays informed and up to date on any changes, trends, news, legal developments that may impact the Casualty product line.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Characteristics:
- Bachelors’ degree
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as an underwriter dealing with complex accounts
- Demonstrated technical expertise and product specific knowledge for Property and Casualty lines
- Ability to effectively interact with all levels of management
- CIP / CRM or equivalent designation preferred
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong oral and written communication skills as well as negotiation abilities
- Effective time management skills
