Senior Research Assistant, Resident Participation & Resistance in Urban Planning in Hamburg, Germany

Winnipeg, MB
Senior Level

About the role

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

We are hiring a Senior Research Assistant to work on a project about resident consultation, protest, and resistance to planned redevelopment in a racially stigmatized neighbourhood of Hamburg, Germany.

The Senior Research Assistant will be responsible for conducting a literature review to inform the project, in collaboration with the lead researcher (Dr. Julie Chamberlain, Urban and Inner-City Studies). There is an opportunity to negotiate a focus that both serves the project and aligns with the research assistant’s interests (topics could include participation and community consultation in urban planning in Germany; or tensions between climate/environmental activism and housing needs in gentrifying neighbourhoods).

This is an opportunity for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student with experience in literature review to further develop their skills and experience in a supportive environment. Most of the work can be done remotely, with occasional in-person meetings (if possible).

Duties:

  • Gather and organize scholarly literature and documents on the agreed-upon topic(s).
  • Draft a literature review for a scholarly audience.
  • Consult regularly with the lead researcher about insights, challenges and progress.
  • Other possible tasks, such as preparing article drafts and materials for submission to research funders.

Qualifications:

  • Completed or near-completed degree in a related area (e.g. planning, geography, urban studies).
  • Demonstrated experience writing effective reviews of scholarly literature.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with critical knowledge frameworks (i.e. scholarship that is anti-racist, feminist, queer, decolonial).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Completed or near-completed degree in a related area (e.g. planning, geography, urban studies).
  • Demonstrated ability to use Zotero is an asset.
  • Ability to read and understand German is a strong asset

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from April 30, 2026 - September 30, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-120 hours.

Note*: This position is represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada - Research Capacity Unit.*

Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted remotely.
