This position is open to Clinical Social Workers, Counselling Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Provisional Psychologists, and Registered Psychologists to apply to.

The job provides counseling services for pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 students within a school environment. The job’s focus is to address mental health-related issues impacting students. To perform the work, the incumbent collaborates with the school's multidisciplinary student support team to enable the success of both the present and future students. The incumbent receives direction from the manager and works under the general supervision of the principal at the respective school.

Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Liaise closely with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and parents/guardians who participate in each student’s program planning
  • Provide counseling/therapy in individual and group settings
  • Develop a service plan and conduct reviews during the duration of therapy
  • Conduct and analyze suicide risk assessments
  • Recommend intervention strategies that include programming for generalization in the classroom, home, and new environments
  • Provide treatment for disorders in cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, and emotional functioning
  • Develop and implement strategies to target students' individual goals as outlined in Individual Program Plans (IPP) and participate in meetings with other professionals and caregivers.
  • Consult with other professionals to gather background information and coordinate additional services for children to meet the individual’s needs.
  • Provide consultation to support the student’s mental health, enhance family capacity
  • Support students in participation in an educational program
  • Participate in case conferences and multi-disciplinary team meetings
  • Maintain technical knowledge through a range of professional development activities

Qualifications Include:

  • Master’s degree in Counselling or related field, plus three years of related experience
  • Mandatory registration with a regulatory college (Alberta College of Occupational Therapists, Alberta College of Social Workers, College of Alberta Psychologists) or Certified Professional Membership with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and Canadian Certified Counsellor Designation (CCC)
  • Knowledge of assessment, counseling theories, practices, and professional ethics
  • Knowledge of local community resources, education, and social services, culture, and systems
  • Knowledge of program development, presentation techniques, practices, and techniques
  • Knowledge of records management and FOIP Legislation
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs, including Excel, Outlook, Office 365, and databases
  • Knowledge of research, data collection, and analysis techniques
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate highly technical information to a varied group of stakeholders
  • Advanced assessment and problem-solving skills to identify and address educational barriers.
  • Strong counseling, consultation, and collaboration skills
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to anticipate issues and concerns
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to relate to a varied audience
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work independently
  • Strong mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to influence decision-making
  • Ability to develop rapport, trust, and credibility with students, parents/guardians is essential
  • Excellent organizational time management skills and the ability to work within tight timelines
  • Flexibility is essential for this incumbent, given the variety of mental health needs, safety, and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations
  • General knowledge of Division/department operations, business, goals, and objectives, and an awareness of the curriculum
