About the role

Lead Hand – Dock Service

Hutten & Co. Land and Shore

Owen Sound, ON

$22–$27/hour, based on experience

Connect with the water.

You know the dock scene. You’re comfortable in the elements. And you’re ready to take the next step.

As a Lead Hand – Dock Service, you’ll play a key role in turning waterfront designs into reality while supporting the Crew Leader in guiding a small team. You’ll lead by example — driving productivity, safety, quality, and professionalism on every job site.

This is hands-on, outdoor work — done alongside a high-performing team that values craftsmanship, accountability, and growth.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Project Execution

  • Assist the Crew Leader with supervision, delegation, and coordination of a 2–3 person crew — at times working independently
  • Support management of safety, quality, and productivity on job sites and in the shop/yard
  • Operate tools and equipment such as chainsaw winches, drills, and floating devices
  • Read and interpret installation manuals, layout drawings, and specifications
  • Maintain standards of cleanliness and organization in trucks, trailers, equipment, and job sites
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance: inspections, lubrication, cleaning

Leadership & Accountability

  • Lead by example with safe, responsible, and professional conduct
  • Communicate clearly with customers and crew members
  • Participate actively in team meetings and company initiatives
  • Complete and submit daily logs, timekeeping, site meetings, and planning reports
  • Prepare and submit daily planning to coordinate project goals, identify needs, and remove obstacles
  • Demonstrate shoreline stewardship using environmental best practices

Quality Workmanship

  • Install and remove aluminum pipe, floating, and tower dock systems

  • Install boat lifts and marine rail systems

  • Perform dock service adjustments (height, alignment, repairs)

  • Load, unload, and transport materials using dollies and floating devices

  • Work efficiently to meet estimated job hours while maintaining quality

What Success Looks Like

  • Jobs completed safely, efficiently, and to Hutten quality standards

  • Estimated vs. actual hours managed effectively

  • Consistent daily planning completed

  • Crew members supported, coordinated, and set up for success

  • Customers confident in both the work and the leadership on site

Who This Role Is Perfect For

  • You value the Hutten philosophy and team-first culture

  • You’re service-oriented and focused on teamwork

  • You’re a strong communicator who can confidently support and guide others

  • You embrace deadlines and work smart in strenuous conditions

  • You’re mechanically minded and enjoy assembling

  • You’re comfortable using a smartphone for communication and reporting

  • You’re prepared to work in waves, wind, cold, and deep water (dry suits provided)

  • You can handle difficult shoreline access and steep terrain

  • You have a valid driver’s license
