The Oil Sands Projects team is seeking a Process Engineer to provide technical expertise in supporting the projects, operations and maintenance on the expansion of the extraction plant which are part of the Bitumen Production area. Reporting to the Engineering Manager for Extraction Major Projects, the key focus for this role is to foresee issues, assess options and implement solutions in the processing area - optimizing plant design and operation. The successful candidate will utilize their previous hands-on experience and analytical abilities to assist in establishing the process basis and details for extraction projects.

  • Shift schedule: 5 x 2, 8-hour shifts (Monday – Friday)

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support process engineering scope for concept, FEED, and detailed design phases of oil sands extraction projects
  • Develop and optimize process designs for bitumen extraction, separation, froth treatment, dilution systems, water treatment, utilities, and tailings
  • Prepare and review key process engineering deliverables PFDs, P&IDs, heat & material balances, equipment datasheets, cause & effect diagrams and control narratives
  • Perform process modeling, equipment sizing, and technical evaluations to support design decisions
  • Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, SIL studies and ensure process safety is embedded in designs
  • Support vendor evaluations, technical bid reviews, and design reviews with vendors and EPC partners
  • Collaborate with multi‑discipline teams (engineering, operations & maintenance) to deliver safe, operable, and constructible designs
  • Utilize process simulation tools such as Aspen HYSYS / UNISIM, AFT Fathom and SRC Pipe Flow
  • Capture and apply lessons learned from previous projects
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical best practices within the organization

What You Bring to the Role:

  • Degree in Mineral Process or Chemical engineering
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA
  • 15+ years as a Process Engineer in a mineral processing plant, mining or related industry including 5 years of direct oil sands experience
  • Solid project design, plant engineering and operating experience with a proven track record in optimizing process plants, managing projects and budgets
  • Excellent communication skills, proven analytical abilities and exceptional problems solving skills
  • Initiative and ability to prioritize work, recognizing the need for doing thorough and complete work, but at the same time addressing the demanding schedule requirements
  • Successful track record for teamwork
