##Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent post-secondary education in Graphic Design or Visual Communications required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 1 year of professional experience in a graphic design role within an in-house team, design studio, agency or equivalent freelance/contract environment is required.
  • Demonstrated experience producing accessible, brand-aligned visual communications across digital and print platforms, including web-based deliverables, social media assets and marketing materials is required.
  • Experience creating motion graphics, animated assets, storyboards or video graphics is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with preparing production-ready files and collaborating with external vendors and print/digital production partners is required.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to apply creative problem-solving and design judgment to develop effective visual solutions that meet project objectives and brand standards.
  • Proficiency in design and production tools, including Adobe Creative Cloud applications (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Express, After Effects, Adobe Firefly), and Microsoft Office applications (e.g., PowerPoint, Word) is required, Figma considered an asset.
  • Photography direction and basic image editing skills, including photo manipulation and enhancement is required.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills is required.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize and meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • Ability to work independently, exercising sound judgment and initiative with appropriate direction and regular check-ins, while also collaborating effectively within a team environment is required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

##Key responsibilities

  • Executes brand-aligned design solutions across a range of digital-first and print platforms for internal and external audiences, in support of institutional marketing and communications initiatives.
  • Supports design consultation and collaborates with SMC team members in concept development sessions.
  • Produces creative assets in support of video and motion initiatives, including storyboards and motion-supporting graphics.
  • Applies a solid understanding of contemporary digital and print design principles, including layout, typography, and visual hierarchy, to create effective visual communications.
  • Supports SMC team members in providing guidance to faculties, departments, and units to ensure design deliverables align with institutional marketing objectives and brand standards.
  • Supports the application and maintenance of University brand standards, including the creation and distribution of approved logos, templates, and visual assets, ensuring consistent representation across all communications.
  • Applies accessibility standards and inclusive design principles to ensure deliverables meet University guidelines and best practices.
  • Supports photography and video production, including collaboration with internal and external photographers, videographers, and agencies.
  • Works collaboratively with SMC team members and partners to deliver design projects that are data-informed, goal aligned, and within budget and timelines.
  • Manages multiple projects concurrently with team support, from concept development through final delivery.
  • Supports production workflows, including preparing production-ready files for web, print, and digital projects.
  • Liaises with vendors on technical specifications and ensures quality assurance across deliverables.
  • Maintains organized project files (including use of SMC's project management processes), archives, and digital asset libraries.
  • Provides approved visual assets as required.
  • Ensures compliance with privacy legislation (including FIPPA) and usage permissions across all visual materials.
  • Stays current with evolving design tools, technologies, and industry best practices to inform design decisions and ensure effective visual communication.
  • Other duties as assigned.

##Additional information

Hybrid work option currently available. Successful candidate must reside or be willing to relocate to Winnipeg as in-person work is required.
