Job Description
The Student Success Centre (SSC) integrates programs and services that span the arc of the student journey — from pre-arrival through graduation and into early alumni life. Through career development and experiential learning, academic skills and writing support, global learning, financial literacy, first-year transition, and targeted programs for equity-deserving and international students, the SSC partners with academic units to advance the whole-student experience.
We are seeking a student-centred and collaborative leader to serve as our Director, Student Success Centre- a role that will shape the student experience across the university. Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Students, the Director leads a multidisciplinary team of over 55 staff with a mandate that extends well beyond service delivery: every program is designed to develop students — building self-awareness, cultivating transferable skills, and preparing them for lives of purpose, fulfillment, and global responsibility. As a senior member of the Student Affairs leadership team, the Director will champion an integrated, evidence-informed approach grounded in contemporary student development theory, working in close partnership with Faculties, other Student Affairs and support units, employer and community stakeholders, and student groups to ensure students thrive at every stage of their experience.
The Director SSC will continue to provide leadership in support of the SSC’s efforts in the following areas:
- Student Transition, Retention and Success (academic preparedness, faculty integration, social support, Welcome Week)
- Career Counselling and Employment Services (experiential learning, employer recruitment, employment support, volunteerism)
- Alumni Career Services (up to 10 years post-graduation)
- International and Exchange Student Experience (education, work, and volunteer abroad; international student support and cultural programming)
- Academic Skills and Writing Development
- Financial Literacy (Mac’s Money Centre)
- Targeted programs for equity-seeking students (students with disabilities, equity-deserving groups, first-generation, and transfer students)
The Director, Student Success will be a proactive institutional leader, community liaison, and change agent — someone who can build shared commitment across functional and hierarchical lines, translate strategic priorities into coordinated programs, and mobilize a diverse team in service of a diverse student population. The successful candidate will bring a graduate degree in a related field (or equivalent experience) and 7–10 years of progressive student-centred leadership in a post-secondary setting, with demonstrated expertise in program and policy development, financial and human resources management, and partnership-building across complex institutional environments. They will be a visible champion of equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and reconciliation, and will help foster a mental health-positive organizational culture for both students and staff.
McMaster is committed to building a diverse and inclusive community in which every member is supported, valued, and respected, and we particularly welcome applications from women, persons with disabilities, First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, members of racialized communities, and 2SLGBTQ+ persons.
