Strategic Impact: As a Principal, you will play an important role in championing the client experience, direction, and long-term success of our Private Company Practice, as an integral member of the broader Assurance leadership team in Alberta.
Client Service Experience: Your expertise will be instrumental in delivering a personalized client-focused approach to independent business groups and privately held companies, serving as a trusted advisor to business owners who value practical advice unique to their business needs. While assurance remain important, your focus can go beyond compilations. You will advise owners and decision‑makers on strategy, tax planning and complex business challenges, helping them grow, adapt, and make confident, well-informed decisions.

As a Principal at Doane Grant Thornton, you will be responsible for:

Supporting the growth, leadership, and ongoing development of the Calgary office’s Assurance Practice, with a focus on independently operated business groups within our Alberta Business Unit.

Providing senior assurance leadership to clients, delivering high‑quality, timely, and practical compliance, reviews and connecting with our Tax team on tax planning outcomes.

Acting as a trusted advisor to clients, providing insight on risk, financial reporting, and emerging issues, while maintaining independence and strong technical standards.

Advising privately held business clients on accounting matters and guiding them through business growth and changing financial conditions

Strengthening the operational performance of the practice by building and maintaining relationships with clients across a range of industries

Contributing to new business development through understanding Doane Grant Thornton, our service offerings, and capabilities - supporting our clients in working with the firm for all their anticipated needs.

Actively support firm business development efforts, including working collaboratively with senior leadership, partners, and marketing professionals to identify and support new client relationships.

Developing a high-performing and highly engaged team through mentoring and coaching managers and associates.

Supporting the performance management process by conducting timely reviews, providing ongoing feedback, and training to develop team members.
Key Requirements
Education
- A University Degree (preferably business) and a formal Chartered Professional Accountant (CA, CGA or CMA) and public accounting license is required. (consideration will be given to having met the requirements to obtain the license upon application).
Experience and Attributes
- A minimum of 7 to 10 years’ experience in public accounting within a Professional Services firm. Significant privately held business experience including 4 years at senior manager level or above, with experience signing off compilation and/or review engagements.
- Demonstrated experience growing a practice through excellent client service and development of relationships by actively anticipating client and market needs.
- Strong management and leadership skills with the ability to be an active participant in the development of the Assurance team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including exceptional interpersonal skills, to earn the trust and confidence of clients and colleagues at all levels and influence decision-makers.
- Develop solutions with clients and co-workers through collaborative effort and discussion.
- Innate business acumen skills with demonstrated agility and a drive for results.
- Desire to learn, grow and be an integral part of a team that puts “we before me”, where flexibility is a mindset, and where you trust your colleagues to have your back.
