About the role

Genetic Counsellor

The Genomics Health Services and Policy Research Group specializes in evaluating the adoption of new genomic technologies in clinical practice. We conduct mixed methods research such as randomized controlled trials, qualitative, and survey studies. We assess patient & provider preferences, health outcomes, and economic impacts of implementing genetic tests in practice. We partner with a wide range of clinicians, laboratory scientists, health services researchers and policy makers across Canada, the US & Europe to develop the evidence, and inform policy and practice.

The Genomics Health Services and Policy Research Group is currently looking for a Genetic Counsellor. In this position, the individual will perform research activities involving project design and oversight, and collecting, summarizing or analyzing data. The role also includes direct genetic counselling support to research participants. Other tasks include assisting with study administration, adhering to research protocols and working with the study manager/investigator to carry out various aspects of conducting a study.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the collection of study-related data
  • Assisting investigator in the initiation of new research
  • Assisting investigator in the interpretation and implementation of study protocols
  • Preparing REB submissions relative to the initiation and conduct of individual studies
  • Designing consent forms
  • Managing qualitative and quantitative data
  • Aiding with the maintenance and content generation for digital health tools
  • Represent St. Michael’s Hospital at protocol development and study initiation meetings
  • Conducting interviews with research participants using standardized questionnaires and qualitive interview guides
  • Recruiting study participants and working closely with study sites to support participant recruitment
  • Overseeing the ongoing collection and analysis of study related data and ongoing review and development of study databases
  • Ensuring appropriate regulations are adhered to in the conduct of research
  • Present research related information including conference presentations and written study reports where necessary
  • Engaging patient partners and other stakeholders with project updates

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Genetic Counselling is preferred (preferably with 3 years related research experience)

  • Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling and/or American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification is preferred

  • Professional Membership with the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors and/or National Society of Genetic Counselors is preferred

  • Individuals without a degree in genetic counselling, but who possess extensive experience in genetic health services research, will be considered.

  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods and study designs

  • Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills.

  • Superior organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.

  • Professionalism and self-motivation

  • Good personal and program time/detail management skills

  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
