Program Overview: Shunda Creek is a wilderness-based addiction treatment program designed for young adults aged 18–26. The program integrates adventure therapy with individualized addiction treatment, offering participants a safe and intentional environment to explore personal growth and recovery.

Position Overview: The Shunda Creek Therapist is responsible for directing the delivery of the adventure therapy addiction treatment program in accordance with agency policies, directives, and priorities outlined in the Young Adult Treatment provincial program. In collaboration with the Program Supervisor and Manager, the Therapist ensures that daily program activities comply with accreditation and wilderness industry standards, creating an integrated, effective, and therapeutic service.

The Therapist employs an experiential, strength-based approach to support intentional and safe programming. This includes overseeing intake assessments, developing and implementing individualized treatment plans, and providing both individual and group therapy to participants. The Therapist also consults with staff, supports the clinical development of the team, liaises with the Enviros community, participates in program development, and provides emergency on-call clinical support as required. This position involves coaching and mentoring staff in both wilderness and addiction treatment components and requires live-in availability three days per week.

Key Responsibilities:

Working with the participants and supporting them in working through therapeutic needs, then group work with the participants. The Therapist ensures participants have a voice and choice in their treatment and supports staff in developing positive, professional relationships with residents. Working closely with the Program Supervisor and Manager, the Therapist ensures consistent therapeutic direction across the treatment team. Responsibilities include providing clinical guidance to staff, assisting alumni who contact Shunda Creek, supporting the intake screening process, and ensuring all relevant documentation—including case planning, daily notes, and reports—is completed accurately and on time.

The Therapist ensures wilderness staff adhere to occupational health and safety standards, with attention to wildlife protocols, extreme weather, trip hazards, and other environmental considerations.

Health and Safety Considerations: Therapists work in dynamic wilderness environments and on-site facilities, requiring adherence to safety protocols for wildlife encounters, extreme temperatures, forest fires, propane-fueled equipment, and winter hazards. Residents are pre-screened for mental and emotional health needs, and staff are trained to prevent and de-escalate aggressive behavior while ensuring overall safety.

Qualifications – Professional Skills:

  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counselling, or a related discipline
  • Experience in individual, family, and group therapy
  • Registration, licensure, or chartered status with a recognized professional discipline
