The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for administering, communicating, promoting, and evaluating on-site programs and customer initiatives. The Safety Officer will be a point of contact with the customer on all safety and continuous improvement initiatives.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Communicates the corporate safety philosophy that promotes and supports a safe and healthy workplace
  • Sits as a member of the customer’s safety and qualities teams ensuring the customer’s interests are understood and translated into the company’s procedures where practicable
  • Performs regular site audits with respect to safety and quality along with assisting with Cando’s efficiency testing program
  • Prepares all reporting required at the site related to activities including a safety performance scoreboard
  • Ensures they are accessible on site to answer employee questions and provide support and direction on Safety initiatives
  • Ensures all employees on site are kept up-to-date on relevant changes to the various applicable provincial Safety and Health legislations and customer programs
  • Provides coaching and support to Supervisors and Managers regarding policies, practices and programs to ensure that work is performed in a safe manner
  • Ensures incidents, injuries, and near misses are reported and investigated, and appropriate recommendations are implemented
  • Assists with the management of WCB claims and return to work initiatives
  • E testing focus testing
  • Boots on the ground 80%
  • Schedule Monday-Friday, change as needed for onsite
  • Put on monthly safety meetings/participate in the meetings. At tool-boxes when able to be
  • Sit through Customer safety meetings when available

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including ability to extract pertinent information and present diplomatically
  • Critical thinking skills to identify and understand the issues, generate a number of different approaches for resolution, identify the strengths and weaknesses of approaches, and anticipate ramifications of decisions in consideration of variables
  • Information gathering skills used in researching legislative and customer safety and reporting requirements
  • Demonstrated initiative to independently plan, organize, and prioritize workload
  • Proficient use of computer equipment, operating systems, word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
  • Extensive knowledge of Workplace Safety and Health legislation, policies, and practices
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, to plan and resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Exercise discretion and good judgement regarding sensitive or confidential issues and in providing information
  • Ability to work on a rotating basis including days, evenings and weekends
  • Ability to travel up to 40% of the time

Education & Experience

  • Completion of an accredited Occupational Safety and Health Program is preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) years combined experience in the field of Workplace Safety and Health, Program Development; and Training
  • Experience working in an industrial environment with knowledge of oil and gas (asset) and rail operations (Must)
  • Hold and maintain a valid Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR certificate
  • A valid driver’s license
