About the role

Job Description:

On behalf of our client, Affinity is seeking a permanent Senior Software Engineer for a hybrid role in Waterloo. This position involves designing, developing, securing, and supporting software applications across the full project lifecycle, including coding, configuration, documentation, and troubleshooting. The role also provides day-to-day operational and production support, including off-hours issue resolution.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates priorities, design goals, risks, options, and compromises and recommends most suitable approach.
  • Familiar with architectural patterns that contribute to the production of secure, reliable, manageable, and high-performance solutions.
  • Perform architectural modelling to assist in determining solution efficacy.
  • Performs estimating, prioritizing, planning, and coordinating of work to reliably and consistently deliver according to plan.
  • Direct research on emerging application development software products, languages, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Performs detailed technical design of proposed solutions.
  • Evaluates relevant risks and determines mitigation strategies.
  • Identify requirements and manage the procurement process and vendor selection for new technologies.
  • Develop and review software programs, code, and unit tests for new and existing applications and systems, ensuring functional and non-functional requirements are met.
  • Develop, and maintain supporting documentation as required.
  • Gather statistics and prepare and write reports on the status of the programming process for discussion with management and/or team members.
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform software improvements and upgrades for optimal performance of company workstations.
  • Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis in support of incident and problem management. Recommended options to address identified issues.
  • Participates in development, implementation, and maintenance of plans to ensure continuation of critical operations in the event of a disaster or interruption.
  • Provides ongoing system maintenance and monitoring to ensure adherence to SLAs.

Qualifications:

  • 6–9 years of relevant software engineering experience delivering scalable, secure applications
  • Strong experience developing web-based applications, RESTful APIs, and distributed microservices architectures
  • Proven expertise with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and container-based deployments (Docker, cloud-ready containers)
  • Solid background in Agile methodologies, with 6+ years working in collaborative, fast-paced Agile teams
  • Experience with secure coding and architecture, including AAA principles and authentication technologies such as OAuth (mandatory), OpenID Connect, and SAML
  • Hands-on experience with Node.js (5–6 years), Vue.js (3–4 years; Vue 2 & 3), and MongoDB (2–3 years)
  • Proficiency in frontend technologies including TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and accessibility standards
  • Strong backend experience with Node.js/Express, REST APIs, YAML (3–4 years), and message brokers (RabbitMQ)
  • Working knowledge of .NET/C# MVC (3+ years), including legacy production support for .NET and SQL-based applications
  • Experience with automated testing practices, including unit, functional, and shift-left testing using frameworks such as xUnit, Selenium, jMeter, and Postman
  • Familiarity with cloud-native development patterns and infrastructure management across public or private cloud environments
  • Strong architectural skills with an emphasis on system modelling, design, and documentation
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
