About the role

Luther College is seeking a reliable and motivated individual to join our maintenance team as a Boiler Operator/Maintenance Worker. This role combines hands-on building operations with general maintenance while preparing the successful candidate for a future supervisory position. Working Monday to Friday 9:00 – 5:30 p.m. the successful candidate will report to the Manager of Physical Plant and is responsible for performing duties pertaining to the daily maintenance of the boiler, dorms, and school.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate and maintain boilers, observing all safety procedures and regulations.
  • Monitor boiler equipment and systems to detect malfunctions and necessary maintenance.
  • Perform routine inspection and maintenance on boiler systems to ensure optimal operation.
  • Record and maintain daily logs on boiler operations, maintenance, and safety activities.
  • Coordinate with the maintenance team to implement repairs and improvements.
  • Adhere to all environmental policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with legal regulations.
  • Perform supervisory duties such as scheduling and delegating tasks as well as training and mentoring junior staff on boiler operation and safety procedures.
  • Observe temperatures and pressures of steam and hot water heating systems.
  • Maintain fans, motors, belts, and perform filter changes throughout the building and cleaning of the mechanical areas of the building.
  • Conduct repairs of the residence and academic facilities to ensure the timely and efficient upkeep of the high school campus’s facilities, potentially including painting; drywall; installing flooring; plumbing; repairing lighting; minor electrical; and changing or repairing locks on doors.
  • Manage and respond to work tickets using computer systems; must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Help to provide physical plant support for needed special events held in the building such as assisting with special furniture, risers, or room set ups.
  • Participate in various renovation projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is desirable.
  • The incumbent will possess or be willing to obtain a 5th class Engineering certificate or a Fireman’s certificate.
  • Solid understanding of boiler systems, mechanics, and safety standards.
  • Three or more years’ experience in building maintenance.
  • Three or more years’ experience in heating and cooling syste
  • Experience operating and maintaining equipment such as scissor lifts, lawn mowers, snow blowers, polishers and floor scrubbing equipment is an asset.
  • A demonstrated commitment to employee health and safety practices and procedures is required. Knowledge of cleaning materials and chemicals used in the College and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is essential.
  • Flexibility and availability for emergency callouts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other employees is essential.
  • The incumbent must be physically fit and will be required to routinely lift moderately heavy loads of 50 pounds or more. Most of the day will be spent walking, bending, or kneeling in the performance of duties.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $30.05 – $40.57 per hour. A 15% supervisory stipend will be applied to shifts where the incumbent is acting supervisor. Luther College offers vacation, medical and dental benefits as well as an employee and family assistance plan through the Saskatchewan School Board Association agreement and is available after the completion of a three-month waiting period.
