Position Information

The Gender Affirming Care Program at The Ottawa Hospital aims to improve access to transition related surgeries and streamline care coordination for 2STNBGD (Two-Spirit, Trans, Non-binary, and Gender Diverse) adults.

The APN - Gender Affirming Care is pivotal to the Gender Affirming Care Program. Operating in a leadership capacity, the APN will provide essential oversight to the Gender Affirming Care Program, facilitating access to care across the continuum - from initial consultation through post-surgical follow-up. The APN - Gender Affirming Care will support clinical practice by guiding evidence-based care, developing program-specific policies and procedures, and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration. The APN will champion the creation of educational resources and care navigation tools to support both patients and staff, ensuring a patient-centered, affirming, and equitable surgical journey. The APN - Gender Affirming Care works according to the advanced practice nursing framework as outlined by the Canadian Nurses Association and The Ottawa Hospital. The APN-Gender Affirming Care demonstrates competence by integrating clinical practice, consultation, education, leadership, and research into their work.

Rotation/Shifts

Days, 8 hour shifts.

What you will bring

  • Registered nurse with master's preparation in nursing preferred or masters degree in a related discipline with an undergraduate degree in nursing;
  • Certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario;
  • Member of the RNAO;
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working in surgical care;
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working in interprofessional teams and with diverse patient populations;
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience applying an equity, diversity, and inclusion framework to promote a culture of inclusivity and respect to a program and/or in the workplace;
  • Ability to provide person-centered, trauma-informed, and equity-focused care, with an interest in applying these skills to gender affirming care;
  • High degree of professionalism and composure, demonstrated ability to lead in the face of challenge;
  • Ability to think systematically - a well-developed understanding of the interconnections of the healthcare system and its related communities;
  • Proficiency in program planning and delivery;
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering education to clients and healthcare providers;
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and strong collaborative approach, including with community stakeholders, external care providers and other agencies;
  • Knowledge of computers including MS Office suite of software.

You will stand out with:

  • One (1) year of leadership experience;
  • Two (2) years of specialized experience in Gender Affirming Care;
  • Proficiency in English and French oral expression (advanced level) and comprehension (advanced level).
