##Opportunity

MacEwan University is seeking a Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Intern for a 4-month (May to August), non-recurring term opportunity with our Health, Safety & Environment department.

Join our team as a Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Intern and play a meaningful role in advancing a safer, healthier campus community. In this dynamic position, you will contribute to impactful projects that strengthen our health and safety program, from developing practical HSE Insights for everyday use to supporting ergonomic and job demand assessments. You’ll gain hands-on experience working with chemical safety systems, auditing inventories, and collaborating with departments across the institution. This internship offers a unique opportunity to build real-world skills in occupational health and safety, program development, and training within a post-secondary environment—all while making a tangible difference.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing concise, research-based health and safety content for toolbox talks, safety moments, and team meetings across the university;
  • Reviewing existing HSE materials and identify relevant safety topics aligned with organizational priorities;
  • Researching, drafting, formatting, and revising HSE Insights in collaboration with the HSE team, incorporating feedback to ensure accuracy and quality;
  • Managing document control by uploading and organizing finalized safety content within SharePoint;
  • Researching industry standards and best practices related to physical and psychological demand assessments;
  • Supporting the design and development of a Physical & Psychological Demand Analysis template, including defining required fields and structure;
  • Collaborating with supervisors, managers, and HSE consultants to gather job-specific information for demand analysis;
  • Completing Physical & Psychological Demand Assessments for designated roles using standardized templates;
  • Conducting chemical inventory audits across university departments in accordance with HMIS protocols;
  • Verifying and update chemical inventory records through coordination with departmental contacts;
  • Ensuring accuracy and compliance of HMIS data within institutional systems;
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of health, safety, and environmental standards, procedures, and training materials; and
  • Providing administrative and operational support to maintain and enhance the HSE program.

####Skills

You will have:

  • Demonstrated strength in research and technical writing, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear, concise content;
  • Highly developed organizational and time management skills, with strong attention to detail;
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; and
  • Experience with SharePoint for document management and collaboration; familiarity considered an asset.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary OHS program.
  • Previous experience in a safety position is an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
