Senior Electrical/P&C Site Engineer

What you'll do

BC Hydro is looking for an experienced Electrical Site Engineer to work on our construction projects and make sure that

construction and commissioning are done right. If you are a self-starter who enjoys working in the field on large and

complex construction projects and working on new BC Hydro stations, then we invite you to join the Site Engineering team.

  • At the heart of the construction and commissioning, you use your technical expertise in electrical equipment, protection,

and control (P&C) design, construction and testing to get answers to complex technical queries and problems by bringing

design engineers and contractors together to keep construction and commissioning on track.

  • Develop and oversee all technical aspects of field engineering for construction and commissioning of new electrical and

P&C equipment. This includes, but is not limited to switchgear, reactive equipment installation, electrical equipment

protection, generator/turbine control and monitoring, communication networks, water conveyance and spillway control

systems and instrumentation systems.

  • Construction oversight on major projects, working with our contractors to ensure proper coordination and staging of

construction and commissioning activities. You are involved in reviewing constructability, development of plans, schedules,

procedures, and construction/commissioning methods to assure conformance.

  • Perform first-level quality assurance to confirm that the execution of work is in accordance with the plans, specifications,

drawings, and industry standards – the work adheres to accepted engineering practice.

  • Ensure that tests and inspections are performed, witnessed, and documented in accordance with approved procedures

and contract requirements. You do the field review as POR’s delegate, or you coordinate witness and hold points for critical

components and document these activities in field review records.

  • Maintain strong relationships and liaise with different discipline design engineering staff, both to conduct field review and

to organize timely resolution of technical issues. You sort out non-compliance issues in the field by bringing design and

construction people together.

  • Collaborate with Construction Management to eliminate any hazards associated with the work that may adversely affect

the environment or the safety or health of employees.

  • Organizes the accumulation of assigned discipline technical information (redlined construction drawings, RFIs, non-

conformance reports). Then synthesize this into the construction report telling the construction story.

  • You then take the construction over to commissioning – and develop the commissioning plans to systematically bring

electrical systems on-line and prove out their function.

  • You share what you know and encourage the professional development of engineers and technical staff. You coach/

mentor and provide instruction, advice, and technical guidance to others.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.

  • Eight years’ experience in engineering related to electrical construction, testing and commissioning, preferably with a

background in high voltage equipment or protection and controls in a utility environment.

  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of British Columbia.

  • Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills, excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development such as self-study, attendance at technical and administrative courses

and participation in technical and professional societies.

  • Demonstrated team player that is approachable, takes initiative, and is a proven problem solver.

  • Ability to analyze and resolve challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence and

understand and appreciate implications of costs, constructability, operability, and safety.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of substation and generating station design, construction, and

testing and knowledge and practical experience with:

  • Commissioning and testing experience with high voltage equipment
  • Electrical utility generation protection systems such as: automated unit control schemes, digital relays and PLC

programing, electrical and non-electrical protection, governor and exciter control systems, water flow and spillway control

systems, air gap and unit vibration monitoring, shear pin monitoring, spill gate controls, reservoir level monitoring, penstock

protection, unit auxiliary controls, control room design, etc.

  • MRS compliance including NERC-PRC, CIP, and MOD Standards.
  • BC Hydro Engineering, Construction, Maintenance Practices
