About the role

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The Role The CRF, an NHS facility set up to support clinical research across GG&C, is the clinical operational component of Glasgow Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). The CTU comprises of NHS Research & Development dept, Robertson Centre for Biostatistics and the CRF. There are currently over 90 staff employed across the Adult and Children’s CRFs. The GCRF is an NHS & University of Glasgow facility set up to support treatment-changing clinical research across NHS GGC.

The number of studies supported through the Children’s Clinical Research Facility (approx 50), complexity and range of work supported is variable and includes Phase I-IV clinical trials, large scale observational studies, complex interventional studies (non-clinical trial), academic and commercial sponsors. CRF staff provides support to academic and NHS clinical researchers from a range of specialties.

CRF Staffing Comprises Of a Multi-disciplinary Team Working Together To Provide Comprehensive Clinical Research Support To Investigators From Study Start-up To Archiving. The Core Disciplines Within The Team Are

  • Clinical (Research Nurses/Medical)
  • Project Management
  • Education & Training
  • Clerical and administration

The Children’s facility is s located on the same campus as the Royal Hospital for Children and is a joint facility with the adult research team. There are also research facilities at the GRI and GGH. The GCRF is committed to supporting research projects across GG&C in primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern: Fixed Term, Full time

Shift Pattern - Monday – Friday 08:30 – 16:30

Base location - Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

Key Responsibilities Professional

  • Maintain a consistently professional manner with patients, colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Work within NMC standards, legal requirements and ethical frameworks to ensure high‑quality, patient‑centred care.
  • Use evidence‑based practice and ongoing learning to support continuous professional development and revalidation.
  • Conduct clinical research in line with regulatory, governance and ethical requirements.
  • Understand the legal, ethical and professional principles of informed consent in clinical trials.
  • Comply with Data Protection legislation at all times.
  • Follow NHS GG&C and HSE policies, procedures and safety guidelines.

Clinical / Specialist Knowledge

  • Assess, plan and prepare safe environments for study visits, ensuring high standards of care.
  • Deliver high‑quality nursing care to research participants and ensure team members are trained and supported.
  • Organise and manage study workloads to maintain protocol compliance and safeguard participants.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of research protocols, interventions and procedures.
  • Use advanced research skills to carry out study‑specific procedures safely.
  • Provide professional leadership and act as a role model within the research team.
  • Maintain accurate clinical and research records in line with NMC, GCP, CRF and sponsor requirements.
  • Develop and implement research‑related policies, procedures and working practices.
  • Support development and implementation of research initiatives with CRF colleagues.

Education / Training

  • Commit to ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Teach and support staff through personal development plans and skills training.
  • Contribute to CRF induction programmes for internal and external research staff.
  • Identify training needs to ensure safe and effective delivery of research protocols.
  • Undertake additional training to support new study protocols across specialties.
  • Maintain specialist clinical skills and encourage staff to develop their own.
  • Share knowledge through both formal and informal learning opportunities.

Organisational / Managerial

  • Act as lead nurse for allocated studies, managing projects from start‑up to closure while ensuring compliance, timelines, resources and patient safety.
  • Contribute to ongoing development of the CRF and fulfil designated responsibilities.
  • Participate in feasibility assessments for potential CRF projects.
  • Serve as Nurse Coordinator for the Children’s CRF and lead team huddles to prioritise workload.
  • Promote effective teamwork and support change management within the CRF.
  • Take delegated responsibility for operational and safety issues in the clinical area.
  • Communicate effectively with research personnel, ensuring information is shared appropriately.
  • Undertake link coordinator roles and support junior staff in delivering training and implementing policies.
  • Ensure clinical equipment is maintained, used correctly and staff are competent.
  • Address complaints at local level and intervene appropriately.
  • Report adverse events and critical incidents, ensuring correct documentation and supporting staff learning.
  • Contribute to long‑term CRF strategic planning through working groups.
  • Participate in the mentoring programme and act as a mentor for designated staff.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • First Level Registered Paediatric Nurse with significant, current and relevant clinical experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate competencies in relation to experience with evidence of highly developed clinical and technical skills including venepuncture, cannulation, ILS, IV drug administration and 12 lead ECGs.
  • Experience of working in both academic and commercial research.
  • Experience demonstrating the post holders ability to lead a clinical research or comparable project e.g. audit or clinical effectiveness, including the management of staff and resources.
  • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development, educated to degree level (or working towards).
  • Knowledge of current research regulations and governance requirements.
  • Experience of working effectively in a multi-disciplinary team with key responsibilities within the team.
  • Motivated and able to demonstrate excellent team management skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills/ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload across different clinical areas and clinical trials to meet project timelines.
  • Ability to use IT systems proficiently including Microsoft Office, electronic patient management systems and web-based technologies.
  • Evidence of highly developed current clinical and technical skills in the clinical setting.
