Responsible to: Food Program Coordinator
Hours: Casual 24 to 30 hours/week
Pay - $23/hr
Purpose:
Working under the leadership and direction of the Food Program Coordinator, the Prep Cook works to implement and help coordinate the work of MTR food programs and other food impact services ensuring consistency with the mission, vision and values of both More Than A Roof Group of Societies.
Work tasks and responsibilities:
Community Kitchen Food and Service Related Activities:
The Prep Cook will provide support to the kitchen and food service initiatives in our downtown buildings.
Specific duties may include but not be limited to:
· Assisting with meal service and related activities, such as assisting with training leading Soul Kitchen volunteers
· Assisting in the coordination and implementation of menus, meals and kitchen activities
These activities may include, but not be limited to, BBQ’s, breakfasts, lunches or dinners plus outreach and special event assistance
This would also involve picking up food donations and meal delivery
· Liaise, as directed, with community partners to ensure consistency and reliability of food programming
· Meal planning and preparation,
· Facility and equipment upkeep, operate cooking equipment in a safe and proper manner. Check equipment and cooking area after use to ensure safety requirements are maintained. Ensure all dietary equipment is maintained in a proper working order
· Involve in creating developing and maintaining the menu, give oversight to ordering of food and supplies, ensure compliance with dietary regulations as per Accreditation requirements, have an appropriate, creative and efficient use of food including donations, in order to minimize wastage.
· Work with work practices within parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services to clients.
· In the absence of the Chef, takes responsibility for the production of the department
Administration:
· Under the direction of the Manager, the Prep Cook will be responsible, where appropriate, for reporting to update management about needs or progress with kitchen programs and activities as required. Role may need to involve in reporting, documentation and administration requirements, health and safety standards
Supervision and Mentoring Plan:
The Prep Cook is responsible to the Food Program Coordinator in conjunction with building management at our downtown sites. The assistant, where possible, will participate in weekly staff meetings, as well as schedule follow up mentoring time with the Manager to discuss and evaluate progress and previous or ongoing events.
Work Safe Practices:
Following adequate training, the assistant is responsible to apply all foodsafe and worksafe procedures as a natural and important aspect of the job description.
Qualifications
- Minimum High School completion, university education in food services is an asset
- Prior related experience working in a comparable food services operation is an asset
- Clear criminal record check
- Good organizational skills and strong interpersonal skills
- Physically able to assist in loading/unloading donations and lifting/moving equipment more than 20 pounds
- Attentive listening, compassion, good communication skills and a desire to work with people
- Class 5 Drivers license to be able to drive the food delivery truck
Working Conditions
MTR employees work closely with members in the vulnerable sector, both within our client base and with the general public. There may be exposure to abuse (verbal or physical), encounters with individuals in unsanitary conditions, and interactions with individuals experiencing emotional issues or vicarious trauma.
More Than a Roof is a faith-based ministry, guided and operated by those who are mature in the Christian faith. This role will involve a component of Christian ministry and outreach. A statement of faith is requested from candidates as part of the application process.
