Ready to Keep Railway Projects Moving?
If you’re an experienced Float Truck Driver who takes pride in safe heavy haul operations, precision load securement, and supporting railway construction crews in the field, this is your opportunity to be part of a team that’s delivering Canada’s rail infrastructure the right way.
Universal Rail Solutions Inc. is currently seeking qualified Float Truck Drivers to support railway construction, maintenance, and mobilization activities across Ontario.
Who We Are
At Universal Rail Solutions Inc., our work is getting and keeping Canada’s railway operators in motion — safely and sustainably. We work coast to coast on every railway and on projects of all sizes, delivering service excellence and exceptional value to our clients.
Within our team, we call this Doing It Right!
The Opportunity
As a Float Truck Driver, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of heavy construction and railway equipment to and from project sites using a tractor trailer with a lowboy/float.
Working closely with Track Construction and Maintenance crews, you’ll play a critical role in supporting project mobilization, production schedules, and site readiness — while complying with MTO, CVOR, railway safety requirements, and company transportation and safety policies.
This role is more than driving — it’s about planning, coordination, situational awareness, and safety driven execution in demanding rail environments.
What You’ll Do
- Safely operate a tractor trailer with a lowboy/float to haul heavy and oversized/overweight equipment between yards and railway job sites.
- Transport equipment such as excavators, dozers, tampers, hi rail gear, and other construction machinery.
- Plan routes considering oversize/overweight permits, seasonal load restrictions, and pilot/escort requirements.
- Perform safe loading and unloading using ramps, winches, chains, binders, blocking, chocking, and edge protection.
- Ensure load securement meets regulatory requirements and company procedures.
- Coordinate move timing with project teams to minimize downtime and meet production schedules.
- Conduct thorough pre trip, en route, and post trip inspections; complete driver logs, DVIRs, and required documentation accurately.
- Maintain compliance with MTO regulations, Hours of Service, CVOR, and company transportation policies.
- Adhere to site access controls and railway safety requirements, including job briefings and track protection.
- Participate in tailboards/JHAs, hazard reporting, and incident reporting.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness and report defects promptly for repair.
- Deliver equipment to linear, remote, confined, and nighttime worksites with variable footing.
- Support mobilization and demobilization for possessions, blockades, shutdowns, and emergency call outs as required.
What You Bring
- Valid Ontario AZ Driver’s Licence with a clean Driver’s Abstract (CVOR and Abstract required).
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience hauling heavy equipment on a float/lowboy.
- Ability to operate and position common construction equipment for loading and securement.
- Strong understanding of Hours of Service, DVIRs, and electronic logging systems.
- Proficiency with chains, binders, edge protection, blocking, and securement points.
- Experience with winter driving, remote access, rough terrain, and night operations.
- Ability to read and understand permits, route restrictions, clearance diagrams, and site plans.
- Excellent situational awareness and hazard recognition.
- Clear and professional communication with dispatch, site supervisors, and railway protection staff.
- Physically capable of climbing, crouching, kneeling, and handling heavy securement gear.
- Willingness to work days, nights, weekends, overtime, and travel throughout Ontario.
- Railway safety training (e.g., CROR) or willingness to obtain.
- First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, and Working at Heights (or willingness to obtain).
- Willingness to obtain and/or maintain union membership.
What We Offer
- Competitive pay.
- Union membership with a comprehensive benefits program.
- Growth and advancement opportunities where available.
- The opportunity to work with a strong team where Safety is an integral part of our culture.
