About the role

R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited is seeking an experienced Instrumentation Engineer with expertise in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to join our Water and Wastewater Team. As a part of our team, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to a variety of projects involving the assessment, planning, study, design, approval, and construction administration of public, Indigenous, and some private sector water and wastewater infrastructure.

Work where it suits you best — Mississauga, Guelph, Collingwood, Hamilton, Orangeville, or Woodstock — while enjoying opportunities to connect with our teams in other offices through occasional travel.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Developing instrumentation and control system designs, including P&IDs, layouts, and Process Control Narratives.
  • Designing and supporting SCADA system architectures, PLC programming, and communication protocols.
  • Guiding clients in selecting automation and instrumentation solutions that improve efficiency and reliability in treatment facilities.
  • Leading commissioning activities and troubleshooting systems to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient operations.
  • Bringing forward innovations such as cloud-based SCADA, IoT, and predictive analytics to strengthen water management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed engineering documents including reports, specifications, and drawings.
  • Conduct site assessments, feasibility studies, and performance evaluations.
  • Support construction and commissioning phases by reviewing submittals, testing systems, and assisting with startup.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, CAD staff, contractors, and vendors to deliver projects on time and within scope.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and industry regulations across all project work.
  • Develop proposals, cost estimates, and scopes of work to support business development.

What Success Looks Like In This Role

  • Projects move smoothly from concept through commissioning under your technical leadership.
  • Clients see you as a trusted advisor for SCADA and instrumentation solutions.
  • Systems you design and implement deliver measurable improvements in reliability, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Your contributions help Burnside win new work and build long-term client relationships.
  • You elevate the Water & Wastewater Team by introducing modern automation and digital control solutions.

What You Bring

  • A degree in Instrumentation, Electrical, or Control Systems Engineering (or related).
  • 5+ years of SCADA and instrumentation experience in water/wastewater facilities.
  • Proven skills in PLC programming, SCADA platforms, and field instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices for control systems in critical infrastructure.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, particularly in the field.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and project coordination skills.

Stand-out Qualities Include

  • Project management or leadership experience.
  • Certifications in SCADA, PLCs, or industrial automation.
