Job Synopsis

The Senior Accountant will be an essential member of the MCC Saskatchewan finance team, focusing on providing internal and external reports, coordinating ongoing accounting and core support tasks, maintaining internal controls, and managing select administrative tasks. As part of the core support of the organization, the finance team uses their skills and expert knowledge to make MCC stronger as we contribute to the vital work of local and international relief, development, and peace. The Senior Accountant is relied on for accuracy in not-for-profit accounting tasks, expertise in implementing accounting policies, and clarity in communicating relevant information to colleagues and leadership teams.

This is a new role within the MCC Saskatchewan finance team which reports directly to the Director of Finance SK & MB, and can be adapted to be either full time or 0.8 FTE. While there is opportunity for occasional work from home, this is not a remote role.

Essential:

  • Minimum five years of experience in full cycle accounting

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field

  • Enrollment in CPA program or completion of CPA designation

  • Knowledge of Accounting Standards for Non-Profit Organizations (ASNPO) and government reporting requirements for charities and related retail enterprises

  • Expert level knowledge of Microsoft Excel and good knowledge of other Microsoft Office modules

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment; strong time management skills

  • Willingness to travel occasionally for meetings and collaboration

  • Available for occasional evening and weekend work; available during year end audit work April-May each year

  • Valid Saskatchewan driver’s license

  • Satisfactory criminal record check

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada

Preferred:

  • Experience in non-profit accounting environment
  • Experience using SparkRock (Dynamics 365 Business Central) and PowerBI software
  • Experience designing custom financial reports (Power BI or other)
  • Experience working in multi-department organization, including Retail exposure
  • Experience with insurance – liability, D&O, building
  • Experience with IT oversight

Key Responsibilities

Reporting

  • Submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to MCC Canada in the required template format

  • Prepare annual T3010 Charity Information Return

  • Manage fixed asset tracking and depreciation calculations

  • Manage the information flow for annual external audit, coordinating responses to all information requests that form the year end audit working papers

  • Complete government reporting documents as required, such as to Statistics Canada

  • Monitor cash flow and cash investments, initiating transactions as required

  • Monitor and update financial policies for MCC Saskatchewan in collaboration with MCC Manitoba

  • Monitor and update MCC Saskatchewan’s CRA online account

  • Prepare monthly and occasional reports as required, in PowerBI or Excel

  • Collaborate with inter-departmental colleagues in completing special reports for grants, events, and special funders

  • Assist Director in preparation & upload of the annual budget

  • Create and implement new policies and procedures that improve the effectiveness and clarity of internal reporting; Report on observed discrepancies or internal control overrides to Director

  • Track and report on Net Asset funds and Deferred contributions and the related Terms of Reference

Accounting & Core Support

  • Monitor and support Thrift Shop financial policies and best practices. Assess and improve internal controls and reporting by providing on-site and virtual training to thrift managers and boards.

  • Oversee daily and monthly transactions, calculations, and reconciliations, including the verification of tasks delegated to other team members

  • Ensure internal controls are adequate and fully implemented

  • Coordinate coverage for team member absence (vacation, other)

  • Respond to inquiries from colleagues and stakeholders, providing policy guidance, technical advice, or financial information (fundraising, program, thrift shops, others)

  • Monitor MCCS commitments in the form of leases and contracts

  • Support the Director of Finance in collaborative projects and provide limited coverage in their absence

  • Participate in monthly meetings of the MCCs in Canada Finance Network, speaking on behalf of MCC Saskatchewan; Participate in local and network projects or working groups

  • Work together with provincial colleagues to achieve as much consistency in policy and practice as is reasonably possible.

  • Analyze current practices to propose improvements for effective workflow and/or better risk management through internal controls

  • Create and implement new policies and procedures that improve the overall efficiency and timing of the month end close for both MCCS and Thrift reporting

Administration

  • Oversee MCCS insurance policies, ensuring adequate insurance coverage for MCCS and Thrift Shop both facilities and activities, collaborating with Thrift Manager, Director of Finance, and HR& Operations Director as needed.

  • Serve as the IT Services liaison for technology needs and compliance.

General

  • Participate in regular team meetings and various staff meetings, providing occasional leadership and presentations as needed

Location Description

Saskatchewan has approximately 1.2 million people. Saskatoon, with 270,000 people, is the province’s largest city, and a major service and distribution center supporting the surrounding area with commercial, technical, agricultural, transportation, health, educational, and other public services. The city is named after the saskatoon berry, which is native to the region and is itself derived from the Cree misâskwatômina. Saskatoon is a vibrant hub that includes strong Indigenous presence as well as many newcomer communities.
The MCCS office is located in the northwest industrial area of Saskatoon. The building accommodates MCC staff, a Material Resources Centre, a gathering place, and the offices of several related organizations. MCCS is also represented by six Thrift shops across the province, from Rosthern to Swift Current. The MCCS constituency includes 96 churches, most belonging to Mennonite Church Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches, as well as Rosthern Junior College, a Mennonite high school.

The position is located at the MCCS Office (600 45th St W., Saskatoon) with hybrid work options available.
