The Opportunity
As a Senior Investment Analyst, you will be responsible for providing investment and market intelligence support for Alberta Innovates (AI) programs. This includes business due diligence for investments into AI-aligned technology companies across stages and sectors, and providing analyses to inform evidence-based operational, capital and investment decisions. The Senior Investment Analyst provides advice, builds stakeholder relationships and ensures activities are compliant with corporate policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for duties that will include:
Investment Due Diligence & Analysis
Conduct due diligence on potential investment opportunities across early- to late-stage companies. Assess market potential, technology differentiation, management team strength, competitive landscape, and financial viability. Analyze business plans, financial statements, financial projections (pro formas), and contractual obligations. Perform primary and secondary market research to evaluate industry dynamics and growth opportunities. Conduct technology landscape assessments to validate innovation, competitiveness, and commercialization potential. Synthesize findings and develop investment recommendations for presentation to the Investment Committee. Maintain strict confidentiality of client, investment, and proprietary information. Ensure due diligence activities are conducted in accordance with organizational policies, standards, and governance requirements.
Strategic Analysis & Continuous Improvement
Generate insights to support key analytical and investment decision-making processes. Develop, enhance, and maintain analytical tools, systems, and operational processes. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency, and quality of due diligence activities. Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices relevant to Alberta Innovates’ programs and investment priorities. Provide data-driven recommendations to support program and portfolio objectives.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Relationship Management
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, peers, and colleagues to understand program priorities and manage requests. Collaborate with Technology Development Advisors and Program Managers to deliver value-added support to clients. Coordinate with internal teams to align due diligence activities, timelines, and delivery expectations. Develop and maintain external networks with investors, funding organizations, and SME-supporting institutions to strengthen due diligence efforts. Engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders while maintaining professionalism and responsiveness.
Required
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in commerce, business administration, economics, science or engineering. 6 years in management consulting, private equity or venture capital, commercial/investment banking or working with (or for) a technology based Small to Medium Enterprise (SME). Interpreting business cases and financial statements to predict the viability and growth potential of investments Strategic thinker with market and IP (Intellectual Property) landscape assessment skills. Comfortable in making intelligent assumptions to produce high level market estimates. Ability to multitask between assessments, work under tight deadlines, with a passion for accuracy and quality. Comfortable with new and emerging technologies and (or) markets. Ability to manage stakeholder relationships and generate respect and trust from a diverse group of stakeholders. Exceptional verbal, written, listening and interpersonal skills to convey information and concepts.
Preferred
MBA/Chartered Business Valuator (CBV)/Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) considered assets. Experience with SMEs in the technology commercialization space. Knowledge of emerging technologies and their applications. Knowledge of financial frauds in businesses. Demonstrated business sense in a diversified set of industries.
