About the role

Horizon Legacy is building construction automation systems that combine robotics, and industrial automation, to change how buildings are designed, fabricated, and delivered. We are moving from prototype development into low-volume production, with a goal of deploying and supporting multiple construction automation systems in the field.

We are looking for a hands-on Mechatronics Engineering Specialist who can take ownership of complete construction automation systems. This is not an office only based role. You will design, build, program, commission, test, troubleshoot, and continuously improve automation systems deployed in real construction environments. You will be part of an engineering team that is responsible for mechatronic systems across the full product lifecycle:

Concept → Design → Prototype → Testing → Commissioning → Continuous Improvement

Job Summary: This position is responsible for designing, constructing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving construction automation, robotics, safety, and data collection systems to support quality, safety, continuous improvement, and production uptime. This position will act as a technical escalation resource for new technology implementation, complex equipment issues, and help standardize mechatronics practices across the company.

Strong CAD and 3D modeling skills. Experience creating detail mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, and working with external vendors. Practical hands-on experience fabricating, building, and modifying mechanical systems. Experience developing electrical schematics and control panels to UL 508a standards. Strong hands-on experience wiring, commissioning, troubleshooting automated robotic cells, safety circuits, sensors, vision systems, related manufacturing equipment, and electrical controls systems to the component level. Strong knowledge of PLC programming to IEC 61131-3 standards, Allen-Bradley PLCs, including ControlLogix/CompactLogix platforms, Studio 5000. Strong knowledge of HMI systems, including PanelView, FactoryTalk View, HMI troubleshooting, screen modifications, alarms, and operator interface improvements. Knowledge of industrial networks and communication protocols, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus, CANbus, IOLink, Profinet, managed switches, machine networks, PLC-to-PLC communication, and device-level troubleshooting. Knowledge of machine safety systems, safety PLCs, safety relays, light curtains, gate interlocks, E-stops, safety circuits, and LOTO requirements. Experience with data collection systems, including downtime tracking, cycle time monitoring, production reporting, OPC-UA, Ignition, SQL, Power BI, or similar systems is an asset. Knowledge of mechanical and electrical standards, ASTM, ASME, ANSI, SAE, NFPA, NEMA, RIA, OHSA, CEC, OESC, and others. Comfortable working in office, shop, and field environments. Ability to travel to vendor and customer sites.
