Job Synopsis

The three (3) Thrift Shop Summer Students have primary responsibilities of providing operational support for day-to-day and overall operation of the warehouse and retail sections of the Thrift Shop. Some computer/administrative work may be assigned at the discretion of the Shop Manager or supervisor.
This role provides a quality work experience focusing on youth development and is supported by the Canada Summer Jobs program. To qualify for Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ), youth must be 15-30 years old, legally entitled to work in Canada (citizen, permanent resident, or refugee), and have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the start of employment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming telephone calls, check phone messages throughout the day

Sales Floor

  • Cover for the cashiers as needed for breaks

  • Ensure the front of the Shop is tidy, organized and well-maintained

  • Helping the clerks on sales floor when needed.

  • Helping with cashing out and closing shop. (making sure doors are locked, customers are gone, and sign is turned off.)

  • Attending requests from customers and volunteers.

  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Inventory Management

  • Assist with quality control of stock on sales floor with regular culling of merchandise per the direction of the Manager, Shop Assistant or Assistant Manager

  • Assist the Receiver with the processing of donations, this includes assisting donors if necessary and thanking donors for their generosity

  • Pricing/repairing donations for the sales floor

Office Administration

  • Social media posting and content development as needed

  • Marketing/promotion assistance as needed

Community Partnerships
Under the direction of the Manager:

  • Identify like-minded service providers in the community with whom a service partnership would be mutually beneficial
  • Identify possible programs and services that would benefit from increased knowledge of the services offered by MCC Thrift and MCC programs

Challenges:
This position is physically demanding, requiring lifting of boxes, assisting donors unload their cars and often lifting boxes overhead. The incumbent spends many hours on their feet.

Location Description

Lethbridge is the commercial, financial, transportation and industrial center of southern Alberta. The city's economy developed from drift mining for coal in the late 19th century and agriculture in the early 20th century. Half of the workforce is employed in the health, education, retail and hospitality sectors, and the top five employers are government-based. The only university in Alberta south of Calgary is located in Lethbridge, and two of the three colleges in southern Alberta have campuses in the city. Cultural venues in the city include performing art theatres, museums and sports centers.
