Driven by our desire to help students thrive in their academic and personal lives, the Saanich School District provides quality educational programs and a safe and nurturing learning environment for the over 7,000 culturally diverse students within its 18 schools. Serving the Saanich Peninsula located just north of Victoria, BC, the district has one of the highest graduation rates in the province and a student body that consistently scores well on annual assessment tests, thanks in large part to the dedication and efforts of our 900 teaching and support staff.
Position - Continuing Teacher
Assignment Type - Continuing
FTE/Point Time - 0.2 Point Time
Applicants must have training and/or experience in early learning and have experience as an elementary classroom teacher. Candidates will have a strong understanding of Indigenous pedagogy, Indigenous histories, and cultures, and be able to demonstrate expertise in embedding Indigenous content in a wide range of instructional strategies inclusive of early learning and elementary literacy and numeracy to support Indigenous Learner success.
Applicants will work closely with classroom teachers and the Indigenous Education Team to support Indigenous learners to build a strong literacy and numeracy foundations together with the Core Competencies. Applicants must also be prepared to use technology (e.g. computers, Teams, e-mail, websites, MyEducation BC etc.) for planning, communication, instruction, and reporting purposes; and be prepared to support the Equity in Action Agreement and the District Enhancement Agreement goals. Applicants must be prepared to work with educators and participate/plan in the support of Indigenous initiatives throughout District schools.
Qualifications :
- A valid BC Teaching Certificate
- Bachelor of Education (Elementary)
- Commitment to support the full range of student abilities
- Effective communication skills with students, parents and colleagues
- Candidates will have a strong understanding of Indigenous pedagogy, Indigenous histories, and cultures, and be able to demonstrate expertise in embedding Indigenous content in a wide range of instructional strategies
- Commitment to ongoing professional learning and development
- Applicants must also be prepared to use technology (e.g. computers, Teams, e-mail, websites, MyEducation BC etc.) for planning, communication, instruction, and reporting purposes
Preference will be given to those applicants who:
- Have a minimum of 2 years classroom teaching experience from ( Kindergarten to Grade 5; Middle or Secondary)
- Have thorough knowledge of the redesigned curriculum with integration of Indigenous Worldviews and Perspectives;
- Ability to successfully model proven Indigenous perspectives and methodologies using the First Peoples Principles of Learning;
- Ability to demonstrate strong leadership in all areas of Indigenous Education;
- Knowledge of the W̱SÁNEĆ culture, local protocols, and current issues of concern to persons of Indigenous ancestry, including members of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation and those of other First Nations, Métis, and Inuit backgrounds;
- Readiness to work as a member of the Indigenous Education team including working with classroom teachers, Indigenous Support Staff, District Teacher Leaders, District Staff and Committees;
- Are willing to work in a collaborative/team environment;
- Have training/experience and be willing to use Quality Assessment practices
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with students, parents, and community agencies.
Pursuant to the District's Special Program approval, section 42(3) of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to applicants of Indigenous ancestry who can demonstrate knowledge of, and commitment to Indigenous culture and ancestry.
